Gift link. Spoiler: It is *NOT* “resignation”:

    > Circumstances were different but the last time an ideologically motivated aspiring hegemon threatened the world’s oil supply was 1973, when the Soviet Union was observed making preparations to intervene in the Arab-Israeli war.

    > The episode is also remembered as the last time a U.S. president resorted to an unvarnished nuclear threat, when Richard Nixon warned Moscow off by raising the U.S. military alert status to Defcon 3.

    > Thereupon nuclear bluster permanently vanished from the U.S. presidential vocabulary, experts in diplomacy tell us, for reasons that boil down to a loss of credibility once Moscow could match the U.S. in nuclear firepower. Oddly, though, this now-standard narrative hasn’t been updated for Donald Trump’s first term, much less his second.

    > […]

    > Now he’s in full Nixon mode—his model of a president who, despite the ankle-biting press of Watergate, wielded his commander-in-chief powers boldly even as his political base eroded from under him. Mr. Trump’s personalist approach has him particularly enamored of the U.S. military’s ability to modify the incentives of foreign counterparties with precision munitions.

  2. We have been promised Trump’s downfall every few months going on eleven years now. Let’s just face the fact we are living in hell and hell is eternal.

  3. This headline could have been written every fucking day since his first inauguration.

    What are you doing?

The only two “Nixon moments” that Trump might be experiencing soon are his resignation and a certain rattle…

  5. We should forget about having any effective Watergate or McCarthy “have you no sense of decency” moments. The public is numb to such things.

It’s more likely that Trump dies in office, whether due to an actual or an induced health event.

  6. People aren’t reading the article before commenting. This is far from being critical of Trump – it’s just comparing Trump’s use of the nuclear threat/executive authority to Nixon. If anything the article reads pro-escalation.

He has an entire cabinet walking around in ill-fitting shoes, too afraid to not wear them.

Bullshit. The GOP of 1974 had decency, patriotism, and respect for the rule of law.

  9. Nixon was a competent administrator and far less corrupt. He socialized dialysis which was a threat to the medical industrial complex.

  10. Oh bull fucking shit.

The Nixon moment was when the republicans realized they couldn’t contort the country into eating their shit any more.

The present day republican party has spent decades since precisely the Nixon moment building a fascist deep state so they could prevent ever encountering another Nixon moment.

The reason we fucking have this republican goddamn shit stain in the White House is because they’ve fucking destroyed all integrity and good faith in the US political system, and they have no intention of ever leaving power again.

Fuck. If a mob of conspiracy theorists beating capital police officers on Jan 6th wasn’t enough to have a Nixon moment, this isn’t a fucking Nixon moment.

Every fucking republican has to be purged from office.

  11. I’m tired of all these headlines implying some comeuppance is around the corner when it’s been YEARS of nothing…

  12. Fuck off.

There is no Nixon moment because Nixon was held responsible by his own party. That party is dead. It’s just a cult now.

Spare me with the false hope that does nothing but continue to manufacture consent and sane-wash the actions of a demented old man, 34x convicted felon, and child rapist.

  13. “may”, “could”, “might”, “should”. We’ve been hearing these fucking headlines for over 10 years now, gtfo with these click bait bullshit headlines.

  14. Yeah cuz I’m sure the guys wearing shoes 6 sizes too big bc they won’t say no to dear leader are def gonna vote to impeach

What a waste of time. At no point in that pointless mess does it acknowledge the reality that the Republicans are entirely subservient to Trump. It doesn’t mention the fact that not one have they rebuffed him for anything, or seized their constitutional powers back. Sure Nixon was wielding his power to the end before the party eventually turned on him and forced him. But if raping girls, rampant corruption, disgraceful constitutional rights violations against citizens and choose whatever else hasn’t turned them on him – then why bother with this bullshit piece?

Lmao I’m sorry but this is kinda funny especially after everything he’s done. Fraud sexual assault leading a criminal insurrection and being a pedophile had done much to stop him

  17. I’m not even going to bother to read this. Trump has scandals worse than Watergate pretty much every week and nothing ever happens

  18. Is this the 8th or 9th Nixon moment?

The cultist don’t give a shit. You have to have a soul to force a Nixon moment.
