>Under the deal, the state and federal governments will invest $1 billion each to help the struggling metal refinery transition to renewable energy over 10 years to 2040.
So, that’s the answer to get Sir Jarrod to agree to renewables. Give state government funds to big business to help them transition.
Meanwhile the state offers less than half that figure to assist with the renewable energy transition more broadly. Fuck the LNP.

So the government is getting a share of the business and profits in return for this, right?
Right?

Sure why not just give Rio Tinto $2 billions dollars with no stake in it ffs

Just to point out that public schools got underfunded every year of the first term and then they locked in another decade of underfunding out to 2034.. choices eh?
Oh and Albi found $3.5B for stadium splurge stuff for the Olympics, no haggling or conditions – just wham: $3.5B to match the Qld government’s stadium splurge sports rorts also. The PM was questioned about why he was ok with demolishing a public school to do the stadium knockdown and rebuild and he “makes no apologies”.
So yeah, apparently finding billions for niche pet projects or corporate bailouts is no problem, but the public schools with majority of kids in them: they can be underfunded until 2034 and we’ll just pretend we are fully funding them.

$2,000,000,000 dollars. Divided by 1000 jobs. $2,000,000 dollars per worker. Divided by 12 years after current energy contract expires. $166,666 per worker per year to keep the smelter open.
Other benefits from the $166k per worker per year include 1. The economic benefits for those involved in indirect jobs tied to the smelter. These numbers are always fudged to inflate figures so im not calculating that. 2. The flow on value to businesses and consumers from the upgrade to energy transmission infrastructure.
Is it worth it? Lets hope so. Its our money they just spent.
