
Germany may need coal-fired power plants longer than currently planned, should the energy crisis continue and there is a shortage of electricity. Merz is “not ready” to risk the core of German industry for existing phase-out targets should they “become unrealistic.”

This is certainly understandable, and I can’t fault Merz. You don’t start tearing down infrastructure until you’re 100% certain you’ve got all your bases covered – even if they sit idle for a few years, or are fired up very seldom.
