The craziest part of this story is that a Colonel was the weapons systems officer. For those that don’t know, Colonel is the most senior field-grade officer in the AF. It takes decades to get there. Now, I’m not privy to how they do things in the AF, but a fighter pilot who would be well into their 40s would be insane. Not to mention, far below their typical value as a wing commander or some other high-level leadership role.

While yes, one pilot can fly the plane without a copilot, the copilot is a weapons systems operator. It does not stand to reason that jet would be flying behind enemy lines without a weapons system operator
