That and they maybe thought they would see if they could get the ships outside the straight through while there was a ceasefire. (Marines cant take Kharg island if the ARG is stuck on the outsie of the persian gulf).
Once it was clear Iran wasnt magically opening the straight, the rest of these talks were pointless.

There is no more historically unqualified individual than JD Vance as VP to broker a peace deal. His astounding lack of history, lack of regional political awareness, lack of contextual sociology and his lack of self-awareness means he is a small fish in a big pond. Regardless of the “value” his title brings, his gargantuan chasm of expertise means he is incapable of the task. He will not recognize this and so failure will be directed to the opposition – in other words, he will lie about the outcome, position himself and his delegation as being righteous and having offered everything they could and blame Iran for the impasse.

Also, Iran already gave up stuff and had a written agreement with the US and had its conditions verified by US inspectors. The US walked away from the (JCPOA) agreement in 2018 for no reason. Why should Iran trust the US?
