Don’t shoot the messenger…even if enough states sign the Compact to reach 270 electors, the current Supreme Court will rule against it.

If only americans wouldnt buy this entire “greatest country on earth” and american exceptionalism bs. Then this hubris infested shithole of a country could actually show some humility and realise that hey, maybe the way the entire rest of the world is doing things might actually be a pretty common sense idea.
But no, americans have to do their own thing thats why you have this bizarre and outdated electoral college ; highly undemocratic gerrymandering and every thing is measured in every unit imaginable except for the one the rest of the world uses.

slowly but surely the us is filing paperwork to move out of electoral college land and into basic democaracy…

Would be an interesting feeling to participate in a national election where my vote isn’t thrown in the trash (for being cast in the wrong state).

This benefits every state that isn’t a swing state. Do people who don’t live in a swing state not realize this? Presidents and campaigns only ever pander to and visit like 6 states. I live in a swing state and every presidential candidate of my lifetime has visited and campained within 20 minutes of my home. That’s what flyover country is talking about. If you’re not a swing state you can get stuffed. There’s no point in pa during to your state.

Not one red state has signed this thing in the like 20 years since it started. There’s ~~only a couple of~~ maybe 5 purple states. It’s mostly hard blue states and there’s not enough of those to reach 270.

Oh instead of letting a bunch of tiny contributors decide the outcome of an election? Nah, that makes too much sense.
“and the deciding factor… Ohio!” Like what? No offense to Ohio but come on.

If the states agree to it consensually how is it illegal.
But one step closer?? The journey is long.

It’d be nice if we could get us in the electoral college and behave as a proper democracy however, there would be several challenges to this agreement
The Compact Clause (Article I, Section 10) requires congressional consent for interstate compacts that affect federal power. The courts would be called onto force these states to get congressional approval. Depending on what Congress looks like they may or may not get it. But I assume this is subject to the veto of the current president.
Also, what to do with faithless electors? Say a republican wins the state of Pennsylvania, but a democrat wants the national election. Under the current system, what you’ve actually voted for as a slave of electors. Electors that will be fiercely loyal to the Republican Party. What binds them to vote for the national winner. Courts of ruled that you combined electors to the state results, but nothing says you can combine them to the national results. So that would wind up in front of the courts as well.
We cross these bridges when we come to them, but I would be cautiously optimistic get best about this.

I used to be more excited about this idea. Then i realized that it’s only solidly blue states signing up. I don’t think any swing state or red state will sign up, so this will realistically only matter if the states that are solidly blue hit 270 electors. In which case, it’d always be guaranteed to always have a democrat president without this.
So without any republican states supporting this, it’s just false hope
Kooky-Security-4267 on
This is thrown around every couple of years, a republican would never be elected president using this method and so this will never happen.

Ranked choice voting.
That’s the answer.

My one question about this relies on the idea that states run their own elections and have absolute oversight over their own elections. So what is in place to prevent a state like Florida reporting more votes than is possible for their prefer candidate just so it tips the popular vote in their favor? Is there any oversight preventing a state from essentially vote stuffing their numbers to get the popular vote nationwide?

It makes sense to have the House and Senate, one guaranteeing equal representation no matter the size of the state (Senate) and one reflecting the population size more accurately (House), of course gerrymandering hasn’t helped at all with the House actually reflecting the US population. Still, good concept for the Legislative Branch but the President is representative of ALL people and should be decided by the majority vote, not some manufacturered electoral system that is broken.

This country needs a constitutional convention and makes some of these proposals into amendments that can’t be challenged by the supreme court.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a voting app on our phones!!! The government would never allow it but imagine a 4th branch. House, senate, the president and the people. Can you imagine a government by the people and for the people? What an amazing concept!!!

The great thing about this, is that this will make people feel like their vote mattered and will lead to greater voter turnout. Right now people are kind of defeated, “my vote doesn’t matter because this is a RED/BLUE state and that will never change…”
