The Trump administration is poised to penalize disabled adults simply for living in the same home as their families.
A rule change pushed by White House and DOGE officials would deduct the value of a disabled adult’s bedroom from their monthly [SSI](https://www.ssa.gov/ssi) benefit, even if the family members they live with are poor enough to qualify for food stamps. This would mean slashing the benefits of some of the most low-income SSI recipients by up to a third — or ending their support altogether.
These cuts would affect not just younger disabled adults still living at home with their low-income parents, but also older people with health or financial problems who have had to move in with their adult children on tight budgets.
All told, as many as 400,000 poor and disabled people and indigent older people across the United States could have their support cut or eliminated, according to our analysis.
Presented with a detailed list of this article’s findings, a spokesperson for Trump’s Office of Management and Budget asserted that “this story is false because it speculates about policies that have not yet been decided.” Asked to specify what was false, OMB did not identify anything.

This basically punishes people for having a support system. It’s wild to penalize families for doing exactly what society encourages taking care of their own.

No surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention. Trump and his friends view anyone that isn’t already wealthy, male, straight, white, and some flavor of Christian as second class at best. The cruelty is the point. Making us sicker, poorer, and stupider is the point. Weakening our communities IS the point. If you still can’t grasp this, you’re fucking cooked.

Note: existing disability benefit rules kinda prevent a disabled person from affording to live alone. They don’t really provide full benefits to anyone that can hold down a job or has net assets above a few k.

Right so let’s target the people who already get less then 900$ a month to live on and who’s family’s already have to work extra/put more effort in to help them. Guess im even more screwed, I only get 750$ a month from disability after my Medicare cost for the month, I live with family who’s already working 2 jobs each to try and maintain everything. Not suprised in the least. Just tack in on to everything else the rapist pedophile in chief has done to fuck over people for his own gain. Absolute scum.

The SSDI is reduced by, say, $400, because this is allegedly what they would need to pay to rent a room like they are getting free from their family.
Why doesn’t the family get this $400, then, as what should be the room rent?

As someone who has a relative that lived on SSI with their parents for a long time, this would be devastating to them. They are on social security and not rich by any measure. Her check paid for her food and some bills for her needs. If she had to move home again this would be devastating.

Oh cool, so in addition to taking all of their benefits if they get married– thus preventing them from getting married and ensuring they’re trapped if they do it anyway– now they also don’t want them to stay home with family.
Don’t leave the nest but don’t stay in it either.
They already wanted to be sure the disabled were poor and miserable. The whole disability approval process is just confirming that the person is poor and miserable enough to deserve the pittance. They’ve just done more of the same.
I hope the backlash to this finally sees the marriage penalty removed as well.

People without direct disabled relatives likely have no idea how much of a financial nightmare it is to look after a disabled person under the current system. It starts from birth, where if their disability is a result of a birth defect, you get to fight your insurance as they try to deny or delay your claim for extensive NICU care, the cost of which would bankrupt about 90%+ of American families. Then, you have to find professional care and therapy for your child. That’s extra doctor visits, visits to speech therapy, eating specialists if your kid struggles to eat, the list goes on. These people all have to get paid, and the amount that comes out of your pocket depends on your state’s desire to help pay for these services as well as their ability to actually process your application.
This is all on top of the normal cost of having a child, which is currently staggering compared to even 10 years ago.
Parents of children with disabilities are 2-3x more likely to struggle to make ends meet. That definition usually means they’re one unexpected medical emergency or layoff away from not being able to buy food.
What I’m saying here is that benefits for disabled kids, adults, and their caregivers are woefully inadequate. If you have a child with a disability you are often financially crippled for life, simply for having the audacity to give your child the care and help they deserve. Why anyone would think these people need less help is beyond me.
