American Society Has Proven Too Weak to Stop Dangerous, Unstable, Violent, and Egomaniacal Trump; In face of such destruction and evil, the resistance from civic society has not risen to the deadly challenge either quantitatively or qualitatively.

We had a good run
So the only hope is for McDonald’s to do its thing?
Well duh, civic society crumbling down around us is why we got Trump in the first place
My language right here.
‘Three demonstrations with the weak moniker of No Kings, without follow-up civic mobilizations in congressional districts, doesn’t cut the mustard.’
No one wants to hear this, but it’s the truth.
This is exactly how Republicans have reacted so far:
“What? You mean we can do whatever we want, be responsible for one atrocity after another, and all our opposition is gonna do is flood their downtowns once every few months at an agreed upon date and time? Sweet! Deal!”
And the other thing no one wants to hear is we already regularly protested in record numbers the first time around.
Not saying don’t do it, just agreeing with the author that it’s not enough, and the fact that so many get upset and defensive by that sentiment is part of the problem.
Duh. Only peacefully protesting for half a day every few months does absolutely nothing.
People don’t have much personal incentive to do anything still. They’re busy with working, taking care of family, or have plenty of other things to do like watch the NBA playoffs or baseball season or games to play, as well as vacations and big life moments planned. No one wants to sacrifice any of that stuff they enjoy unless it’s absolutely necessary. It’s also not clear what course of action to take, what exactly would achieve proper change, and we all have different ideas of change anyway. We also lack any leadership, someone to rally around or propose a solution. There’s still hope elections this year could have quite a big effect without the need for mass resistance.
It took years of protests to stop that VietNam fiasco!
The narrative that the largest protests in history are proof we’re too weak only serve the side of fascists. It doesn’t track the empirical facts and it’s practically lab designed to demotivate.
Its not the American people aren’t doing anything its the political establishment that is failing to do what is necessary- no emergency meeting- no avengers of lawyers- no attorney general- no head counsel- nothing on the federal- state- local- no wonder this orangutan paedophile grifter felon rapist murder Russia asset piggy bubba doughboy POS douche psychopathic narcissist with self-serving tendencies and Makaveli Triad personified is brazen and embody to do what he pleases. My god man Jesus christ we failed as a society. Everyone that has power and will should be all be fired.
US constitution turns out to be a wishlist of dreams and rainbows only to be used by true gentlemen
We need a coalition of adults-in-the-room to clean the fascist rot out of the house. Who that is, I don’t know … but past presidents spring to mind.
Oh boy howdy maybe this is my cue?!
Remember all those school shootings that were excused because “we need our guns to protect us from a tyrannical government!”?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
American society has proven it is too weak and corrupt to resist the purchasing of its political institutions by the rich. It’s the money, folks.
It is genuinely amusing to see takes like these.
Like….*no fucking shit* people arent taking the next step. *no fucking shit* people are terrified of poking the bear. People have already been jailed, even *died*, and we arent even really doing anything yet. People are grasping onto the hope that we can still affect things peacefully, including the use of voting, *because what comes after is terrible beyond example*
Do you people clamoring for escalation know what that escalation means? Do you truly?
Maybe people should have fucking turned up two November’s ago and voted, eh? A lot of you people couldn’t be fucked to show up and vote, yet now you want to chide us for, basically, not wanting to basically commit suicide? How dare you.
*we fucking warned you*. All you had to do was goddamn vote for Kamala.
Because our government is unresponsive to the people. It was designed that way. Only major events out of the control of the filthy rich can jar the system enough to change course (famine, world war, pandemic). Those times are when people have to rely on their local communities to build strong ties that break across cultural and political barriers. When our jobs stop being the source of security, we turn to our communities for stability and safety. That’s when people realize their power to fix what’s broken.
Americans will only fight for one thing, keeping pedos in power.
America and Europe will go through a divorce. Tariffs on all sides will increase before Europe decides its had enough and will block US investment and imports outright. Trump will never be able to build in Europe. All troops leave Europe. America is left to destroy itself from within from Nationalist Christians and Maga. More civil unrest ensues. Trump tries to take Greenland. World incident ensues. Putin puts his feet up and mouths a ‘Thank you’ to Trump. The Doomsday Clock advances one more minute to midnight.
We can vote every two years (and yes sometimes in between). I know it has seemed like forever, but we finally get a chance to do that this year. Stay tuned.
This, and most of the comments, seem designed to demoralize people and keep them from showing up to vote. And before anyone says it doesn’t work, I’ll say that’s just more of the same, if they believed yhe fix was in they wouldn’t be scrambling to gerrymander everything and cheat.
Someday, it may be too late, but it’s not quite yet. But it’ll happen sooner if you give up and don’t show up to vote these goons out. They’ve shown you who they are, believe them.
It is even illegal to say what needs to happen. How does nobody fucking get that?
We’re not ICE we can’t get away with murder.
Get back to work slaves. No time to complain.
Americans keep thinking being peaceful is going to help. They still haven’t grasp that to be peaceful towards a pack of rabid wolves is to stupidly submit to their raw power, even if you shout at the pack. You’re just hoping that the pack doesn’t kill you by turning the other cheek, you’re not really fighting the pack.
Wall Street doesn’t bat an eye at protests, but look at how shook the entire establishment was when one of them got offed and the people cheered.
Oops. Thats an ouchy. Nothing ever happens cool
What the hell are we supposed to do, ya moron? -Stork
We aren’t watching the death of democracy. This is the rot of a system long dead. Any attempt to save it is a waste of time and Americans sense it. We activists and organizers must shift to protesting “AGAINST” to helping our fellow marchers to dream of what we want to create. We need something worth fighting FOR.
It’s not a full excuse, but keep in mind that it’s not like everyone can march on the capital. Those of us in California can only really affect California outside of national elections. It’s 3000 miles to D.C.
Even in California, SF and LA are several hundred miles apart. The legislature in a large majority of cities and counties here in the Bay Area are already combating Trump’s BS due to our voting and our protests. There’s more we could do, like boycotts or a general strike against the corporations that are funding MAGA, but like… We’re having a direct impact without resulting to violence.
Yeah, I know. Pretty sad, really.
Honestly its because not enough of us are asking ourselves some pretty critical questions. Ask yourself these questions.
1. Do you trust the federal government to protect you?
2. Do you believe that this administration is targeting specific groups of people?
3. Do you trust in the courts ability to protect you with the established laws of the
country?
4. Do you believe that federal law enforcement is currently respecting our rights as
guaranteed to us by The Constitution?
5. If a federal officer was targeting you and breaking the law, do you think that local or
state law enforcement would stop them to protect you?
6. Do you trust the elected representatives of your party to defend you?
7. Do you think anyone else will come to your rescue?
8. Do you believe in equal rights for all people’s and would you fight to defend those
rights from an unjust force?
9. Are you in a position to defend yourself if others won’t fight for you?
10. Who benefits more from you being unarmed during these times?
With that in mind, remember that unwillingness to fight for your rights is the
same as willingness to live without them. So do what you can with what you have.
Protest, organize, prepare, resist.
I’d prefer if people stopped thinking about their civic duty/political change like its one of their saccharine historical movies that champion the sole hero narrative rather than properly portraying history as the small acts of millions over time, coalescing spontaneously like the first wisps of flame jumping from smoke.
We are not waiting for heroes. We are not waiting for events to transpire. We have everything we need today and now to stop this. These marches are not about forcing the government to do anything, but getting Americans to realize they are on the same side again. That their fears about each other are irrational and they should be more suspicious of those who profit off of them while being immune to the fight. The rest comes naturally, and we are already talking about how it’s too late for the midterms to NOT be a bloodbath where the Republicans lose.
As we go around the poverty/war/civil rights cycle again, it is more important than ever we make the changes permanent this time. When we kick them out this November, remember to put your foot back down in front of you and keep marching to a better future.
Trump is unfortunately the outcome of decades of neglect , it’s like a girl who was abused / neglected by her father, ends up with the same kind of scumbag . We can complain all we want, but trump is what we deserve . We are dumb stubborn ignorant trash , we deserve what we got . We’re lucky it’s not worse … yet ..
Society is strong enough. But both parties have slowly made society weaker, low wages, healthcare dependency on jobs, we are subjected and subservient.
This article, especially the headline, is dangerous shit to be putting out in the world at a time like this. While it’s true that the No Kings protests and other events coordinated by Indivisible haven’t single-handedly amounted to radical change like Trump and his cabinet being forcibly removed from office…these protests absolutely DO MATTER.
Perhaps the most valuable thing these organized protests accomplish is showing our local representatives that we will support them if they challenge Trump and oppose his agenda.
This article is a brazen attempt to diminish any of the momentum that’s been building up over the past year or so. Like I still am having trouble understanding what problem / question the author of this piece feels so compelled to address in this flippant manner. “The Democrats’ resistance already failed so why bother fighting the Trump administration at all?”
Since I didn’t notice anyone else say it in the comments, this think piece is written by Ralph Nader, who, in relentless service of self, cost Al Gore the 2000 election, leading to the Patriot Act, the War in Iraq, EDIT: John Roberts and Samuel Alito, and all of the other countless atrocities and buffooneries of the George W. Bush administration, which set us squarely on the path to the hell on earth we currently reside in. The Green Party tradition that Jill Stein proudly carries on today. 97,000 left wing votes in Florida, which Bush won by 537 votes.
“In a democracy people get the leaders they deserve.” – Count Joseph de Maistre 1811
It’s pretty rich to hear the media lecture Americans on not rising to the moment.
