  1. The ultra-low-cost air carrier Spirit Airlines shut down operations after 34 years in business and canceled all flights at 3AM ET on Saturday morning. Its website now redirects to [spiritrestructuring.com](http://spiritrestructuring.com), instructing fliers not to go to airports, with air traffic control records capturing controllers and pilots signing off to each other as its last flights came in for landings after the shutdown was announced.

A statement on its website said that for people who purchased tickets directly, “Refunds for tickets purchased by credit card and debit card have been issued, and will be processed by Spirit’s credit card processor.” A lawyer for Spirit said the shutdown could impact 17,000 jobs, reports the Associated Press, as the Air Line Pilots Association said its more than 2,000 pilots, as well as flight attendants, mechanics, dispatchers, and ground crews, “deserved better than this outcome.

Many more airlines will, as those fuel prices will cause airline tickets to skyrocket!

Makes you wonder about all the small businesses & mom n’ pop shops going under that don’t get headlines. I know farmers which is essentially a small business are already/going to be really suffering this season.

The war was the final nail in the coffin, and Spirit *might* have survived if the war hadn’t happened. But it’s worth pointing out that his was a long time coming; they were putting out going concern statements (effectively “we’re not sure we’re going to be in business in a year”) as far back as last August. Sprit was also in massive amounts of debt, had a third of its fleet stuck on the ground because of manufacturing defects on some of its planes, had a horrific reputation with the flying public, and was getting pushed around by the Big 3 also introducing basic economy fares. Thank fuck Duffy and Lutnick managed to talk Trump down from bailing them out, because it would’ve been an absolute money pit for taxpayers that probably would’ve delayed this by no more than a couple months.

My gas bill is almost double and i don’t even drive that much. From 60$ in dec to 110$ a few days ago.

  6. Not that Trump’s idiocy isn’t going to break a bunch of other things, but Spirit has been on death watch for literally years. This was going to happen anyway. The US domestic airline market has more capacity than is realistically needed.

The fact that jet fuel prices doubled is basically a death sentence for any airline that isnt sitting on a mountain of cash. Spirit was already struggling with their own issues but this war in Iran was clearly the final nail in the coffin. It is kind of terrifying how fast a global conflict can just ripple through the economy and shut down entire companies like that. I really wonder who is next because if fuel stays this high then flying is about to become a luxury for only the super rich again.

Trump airlines just got a bunch of cheap planes. The grift continues

It’s almost like his ability to bankrupt businesses has no bounds!

Their business model was bad and they were in trouble for at least 5 years.

The fuel crisis just pushed them over the edge.

I feel bad for the people losing their jobs.

  11. I’m all for dogpiling on this administration’s destructive decisions, but I’m not going to cry over Spirit. They were cheap but fucked me over one way or another every time I flew with them, and ultimately cost more in inconvenience and lost luggage.

  12. Trump is causing more job losses. The road to making America great again continues.

It was the nail in the coffin. Airlines already operate on razor thin margins.

I won’t be surprised to see other budget airlines start to fail soon.

Do all jobs in America have to go away first before he can bring them back? 🧐

The less well off again the victim of Trump and yet somehow they’d still vote to own the libs

The government didn’t have money to help them because it is more important to build a horrible ballroom at the White House and create wars somewhere.
