The problem for the public is that none of us really understand the administrations desires here. Did they want to profit over oil money? Did they want to leave a legacy with regime change? Did they just want to project American power for posture sake? Did they just want to go along with Israel because they felt they had no choice? I think I could make a case for any of those positions and none of them paint the administration’s decision making capacity very well. But unfortunately it makes it difficult to tell what the end game is.
For sure the main issue is that they don’t really understand how foreign policy works and they can’t seem to game out the consequences of their actions. That’s been the story of the last year time and time again. It’s what happens when you put a bunch of armchair quarterbacks in charge.
