The article fails to mention that 2.3 billion of the “savings” comes from the city not funding its pension plans by 2032. The deficit wasn’t closed, Mamdani is just pretending it doesn’t exist while he’s in office. Not the worst idea if you’re a short term politician and after 2032 he will be a lame duck assuming he wins re-election. However that’s a potential disaster by basically spending more without actually accounting for the funding you have to make payments to in 6 years
They have spent decades building narratives why you can’t just do all the things that Mamdani is doing and he proved them all wrong. He did this in less than half a year.
That’s why I’m optimistic when you dump Trump in the trash that an actual progressive candidate can change this nation.

NY City is required by law to have a balanced budget. And they’re receiving billions from the state per the headline…. none of the headline is an achievement at the moment. It’s not necessarily bad, but it’ll be years before we know if things are working and sustainable.
Can someone smart explain this to me? Seems like all that happened was the state said “ok, you don’t owe us as much now”. Is that really just it?

This sounds like Hochul and the state is largely responsible, especially since the article itself is saying the pied-a-terre taxes will be less than a billion in increased revenue and that Mamdani admin will in fact be looking to make cuts in certain areas.
