First airports, now seaports. Next Beaverton headline: Carney govt selling USB ports

  2. palpatinevader on

no. just no. this is the evidence that carney did not deserve a majority. i’m sorry, i want to like the guy

  3. Sure am glad that all of those corrupt politicians betrayed their ridings and crossed the floor to aid this guy in selling off Canada piecemeal.

I haven’t seen blatant corruption like this since Ford in Ontario. Maybe he and Carney are trading tips.

I can’t read it since it’s behind a paywall. Why is Canada selling their ports?

I voted for this guy. That kinda talk will lose my vote next time around. I don’t vote for parties, I vote for Canadians.

We only have like 3 ports that are actually useful.

Holy fuck this is a horrible decision.

So the airports and our sea ports ? What would be the reason ? Canadians don’t deserve the profits ?

Australia did this and it is currently causing big trouble.

    Do not do this.

Stupid headline and even dumber redditors.

He is proposing to double exports by increasing efficiencies! None of you read the article.

It seems pointless to compare what each political party did, because let’s face it every PM sold crown assets. What seems important is to understand what’s going on with this talk. The article suggests there is interest in a report to understand the situation with ports, and what to with them – sell, keep, amalgamate. The headline is the attention grabber.

I suppose it is reasonable to want to understand the status of the various crown corporations, how they are operating. A crown corporation doesn’t get a forever pass for running a money pit and wastage is costing more taxpayer dollars. Wouldn’t you as a leader want to know how the crown assets are being run and performing? This approach doesn’t have to be full on corporate capitalism but also not simply think meh, business as usual when assets could be bleeding out and addressed.

I don’t know enough about what is behind this chatter to have an informed opinion. I’m not advocating any position on what to do with ports, but you don’t know what you don’t know until you do know and the question is, is Carney trying to find this out.

  12. Both of these articles are literally a single sentence, with no context or explanation.

The Star is just a ragebait generator at this point.

  13. Nothing screams ‘Building Canada Strong’ quite like selling off your critical national infrastructure to the highest foreign bidder.

People forget Carney is a conservative and likes conservative options.

  15. Lets sell our souls too. Like seriously, whats with our government and privatization of public resources.

which ports are profitable and which ones aren’t? you could lease a port to a management company subject to annual renewals based on performance. No need to sell them.

  17. At least some things never change: conservatives love selling off our assets no matter what party they are part of

  18. There is relatively little money to make short term and a lot to lose long term. This is not a good idea and I expected Carney to know better.

  19. They’ll be bought by entities that are owned by offshore corporations.

Transfer pricing (offshore company charges the Canadian owners for specious reasons) causes almost all of the revenue to leave the country to a low tax environment.

I’m going to ignore my innate desire to tease my neighbors up north. What a fucking disaster.

we actually do need to consider this because otherwise the dock unions will never allow any automation for our ports. Our ports are extremely underdeveloped and has 1/10 the capacity of Singapore. A tiny country that is 1/4 the size of metro Vancouver.

  22. Fuck no. Worst idea. Not onboard with this. Those are critical infrastructures that WE need to control for the greater good of Canadiens. This is ludacris.
