Any country, also in the west, where there was a civil war and part of that country broke off and laid claim to the whole country, being the “real” one, would have tensions and where the bigger part would want to bring that smaller part back into the herd.
If you think that we wouldn’t act like China does in terms of Taiwan, you are naive to the twelfth degree. You can already see how Madrid acts when it comes to Catalunya, or how the US acts around the theoretical event where a few states want to break off from their country. Or Serbia with Kosovo.
Governments doesn’t like when part of their country leaves. It doesn’t matter if you are Chinese, Indian, American, Swedish, Spanish, Nigerian, Brazilian etc. We are all people, and humans tend to act irrationally to things like this.
Only reason people care that much extra about Taiwan is because they create semi-conductors for us.
