I’m pretty sure Putin is regretting the war for quite some time. When he started it, he assumed it would be a limited operation taking only some days or maybe weeks. He thought that the elite Russian forces would steamroll the defenders and the Ukrainian government would collapse. And that the West wouldn’t have time to react before it was too late.
Putin wouldn’t have committed to the full scale invasion if he had known it would turn out to be a multiple years long war of attrition with hundred thousands of casualties.
