It’s great to see this being pushed back into public consciousness. But I will say the same thing that I said at the time: Jake Sullivan being pissed about this was stupid.
Of course the US offered to aid Zelensky in evacuating. Russia was about to attempt an airborne strike on the capital and both Zelensky and the US knew it. Why wouldn’t they make the offer? What if they hadn’t done so? How shitty would that have been?
It was essentially a query for clarification of Ukrainian state policy. And Zelensky clarified the fuck out of Ukrainian policy once and for all time. Mission accomplished.
The correct response from the US National Security Council should have been, “We had questions regarding Zelensky’s view of the situation, he gave us a rather decisive answer, we now have no further questions.”

Viktor Yanukovych ran from Ukraine because his own people were mad at him.
Zelenksy stayed in Ukraine when Russia wanted him dead and was actively invading his country.
It really doesn’t matter what was actually said, who said it, or who reported it.
How a story ends isn’t half as important as how it’s told.
“Ride < Ammunition” and the Ghost of Kyiv stories were great propaganda pieces to inspire hope.

I recall the initial reporting was that he named a specific type of anti-tank weapon and not just ammunition in general, but the spirit and meaning is accurate.

I remember being scared for Ukraine because I had predicted that Russia would actually invade. People gave me shit, too, saying I was a doomer and no way a war like that would happen in the modern world. Dicks.
I’ll be honest, I had thought that Ukraine would not be able to fight back effectively. I did not know Ukrainians, though. I was wrong there.
I remember in the opening days when I heard Zelensky say this that he was no coward but actually a badass of historic proportions. It was amazing to see a leader in the modern world that didn’t have a single thought about abandoning his people. He’d been an actor but he was no clown. Russia said he was dead or fled and then this man posts a selfie of himself on the streets of Kyiv in defiance to send a message. Incredible.
I saw that Ukrainians not only rallied around him but would probably replace him if he didn’t lead a resistance. I saw fearless Ukrainians actually picking up mines off the road delicately and tossing them off when they got confident in how they were triggered…and they were *laughing* as they did it. Then I saw Ukrainian farmers towing abandoned Russian tanks to the Ukrainian military outposts to “repurpose.” When Ukrainians needed more weapons to fight back they took Russia’s weapons and fought them with their own.
I said to myself “Holy shit they are brave, but that’s next to suicidal. These people know no fear. I don’t know if Russia knows what they got themselves in to.” That’s when I know Ukrainians were “built different.”
It became clear to me that Ukrainians down to their hearts knew that they all would never live under Russian tyranny and oppression again. People like that win wars.
Since then I started saying I think Ukraine might actually win this. People scoffed and told me I was wrong, it was wishful thinking. “Russia will inevitably win.” I play enough strategy games to see Ukraine was fighting this intelligently. Look where we are now. Thanks for proving me right, there. 😄
As horrible as this has been, it’s been a joy to learn about Ukrainians and get to know them in some way. You guys are amazing. I’m not just saying that, you guys have showed the modern world bravery and grit.
When the war is over I will love seeing Ukraine rebuild. It might be hard to see this far ahead as a Ukrainian, but better days are coming, and not just because the war will end.
Think about how Germany was destroyed after WW2. But then…they rebuilt. Everything was rebuilt to be modern and efficient. Now they are the biggest economy in Europe. Ukraine will rebuild too. Things will get better and then they will get keep getting better beyond how they were before the war.

i would’ve made the same decision, send forces to rescue an allied leader. I thought the invasion would last a week, moscow will install a puppet government and that’ll be that.
When I saw news reports of what Zelensky said I thought to myself never in my life have I seen a leader like this. I’ve read about them in history books, and seen them in fiction and movies. But here’s someone refusing to flee to safety protected by America while his country is torn apart. He was willing to stay and fight for Ukraine and in that moment I wished he was an American president or that I was Ukrainian lol.
This is how I know Ukraine will win. Because I sure as hell know Putin wouldn’t die for his people. And I honestly have a hard time thinking of anyone else who would.

The first ten days of the war was very telling in the way Russia thought the war would go and the resilience of Ukraine when pupper pulled out of Ukraine to reassess his decision, I thought “this can’t be this easy” and, well, it wasn’t and still isn’t. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦❤️.

I remember arguing with friends who were like Russia is going to steamroll them it’ll be over in a day. And my point of reference was the Georgian War where they failed to establish air superiority over a country with no Air Force and also pointed out they didn’t fix anything. Then Hostomol happened.
