Tariff of 50% have been put on European steel, not enough is being made in the UK so its been chaos for all things steel recently.

The British economy would be far healthier and less at risk to shocks if we became self-sufficient in vitals areas, and kept industry in-house as much as possible.
It won’t be achievable overnight, but this is a strong positive first step.

Buy British, just remember that a lot of companies in the UK are in fact, not British. Such as Royal Mail, Boots, jaguar, Land Rover etc etc, the list is massive.

Using government procurement to give a guaranteed level of demand to support British businesses is a real no brainer, and the ability to do so is a significant Brexit win if done correctly.
Defining “British business” of course isn’t straightforward but other countries manage to do it (good luck getting a ship outfitting contract with the US government without being a US business for example), so it’s not like it’s impossible so we shouldn’t try.

Buying British is fine, when the product is genuinely like for like, or better.
However, it’s a slippery slope of buying british if the product is materially worse.

Honestly there needs to be a requirement for any public spending to prioritise “buying british made” like 10 years ago. For every £1 “more” that it costs, it’ll be mostly be going back into the economy. Ban amazon, temu etc from any teacher, buiding maintaince, project, council just anyone with access to tax payer sourced funding.

I know Cal Mac have not had much success with their Scottish built ferries, but it really is a no brainer that contracts for new ferries are going overseas. Shipbuilding is a major creator of business in its local area and ought to be beyond question that ships for UK domestic use are built here.
Issues of quality, project management and costs can be addressed by rigorous oversight and international comparison allowing for the cost of building things here.
