Immigrants from socially conservative countries tend to be socially conservative, particularly when it comes to LGBTQ rights?
Shocking. This is my shocked face.
Literally no one in the community is surprised by this. Many are still supportive of immigration regardless but the idea that someone who immigrated recently from Pakistan or Nigeria isn’t *stoked* on attending the next pride parade isn’t exactly news.

Um yeah? I mean, it takes a while to get used to some new things if you come from a country that has a different culture in that area. And while it would be nice if they grew to support this, as long as they don’t violently oppose it – so what?

You mean to tell me people from super conservative countries, where religion dominates and supposedly it’s a life threatening place for gays to exist, don’t agree with our open and progressive views? Who could’ve possible seen this coming?!
What next, you gonna tell me they don’t see women as equals? That they feel their religious teachings supersede our laws?

How unfortunate. Good thing that the people crowing about this so much are those who hate immigrants *and* gender-nonconforming people.

Yes immigrants from socially conservative countries have very similar views on LGBTQ+ rights as your local conservative politician. It’s partly why so many of them vote for conservative parties in Canada. This can’t be a surprise for people..

I think people from socially conservative countries know that Canada is progressive, and tend to make their voting decisions on other issues rather than social policies. I think to them it’s typically seen as a losing battle.
I do think however, there was a concerted effort by the media to downplay how prominent the Muslim community was in the “Parent’s Rights” protests twoish years ago, and the events used to galvanize that community into protesting.
This article looks to be an attempt to slow-walk a change in messaging in regards to how the issue is going to be reported going forward.

Is this really surprising? Canada is one of the most socially progressive countries in the world. We shouldn’t expect newcomers to immediately adapt to that.

Foreign owned newspapers chains are more likely to produce noxious and reactionary views then Canadian journalists, yet here we are subsidizing this dross with our taxes.
Canada has better attitudes on gender expression then most of the world is not shocking in the slightest. We were the 3rd country in the world to legalize gay marriage.

Everyone coming in should drink a shot of rye, eat a slice of bacon and do a bit of butt play. It could be done at the point of entry, and it would just keep all the nasty away. Conservative problem solved!

I don’t think that this is super shocking. The conservative party of Canada used to get a lot of votes from socially conservative immigrant families during the Harper era. Unfortunately during his last election campaign, Harper started to pander to xenophobic bigots with his “barbaric cultural practices” tipline & niqab citizenship ceremony controversy.
If the CPC stopped pandering to anti immigrant bigots they probably could still win over a lot of “new Canadian” voters.

I don’t think the National Post really supports the freedom of gender expression either. In fact this is a rather woke argument from them in an effort to continue sowing division.

As a gender noncomforming person who’s lived in ville Saint Laurent for a decade and spent tons of time in other very diverse areas of Montreal (Parc-Ex, Cotes des Neiges, etc…): no shit.
Important thing to note though, lack of support doesn’t equate hostility. I never ever felt unsafe around foreign born folks. Ever. In fact, always been the nicest neighbors and community oriented people I’ve known. Might talk shit behind your back but who doesnt?
The scary people are native born white reactionaries. Angry men that need mental health support. They do hate crimes. They kill people.
Or native born second gen kids who grew up alienated by the system and society for treating them like outsiders.

>The percentage of women who agreed that people should have this right decreased from 85 per cent to 77 per cent between 2018 and 2025, while support among men dropped from 78 per cent to 70 per cent. The StatCan survey doesn’t examine the potential causes behind the decline, but notes that the changes in attitude coincide with “a period of animated public discourse” surrounding the rights of transgender and non-binary people.
Honestly, considering the supposed success and ferver of the American culture war on demonizing trans people, I am surprised the numbers domestically and those born elsewhere are not lower.
This decline is not good for trans people, but it’s not as steep. This number is also still quite high considering that 7 out of 10 Canadian men and nearly 8 out of 10 Canadian women, still don’t care for being force fed this culture war.
