Finnish volunteer caused an accident but even as the court found that he "was sober, was not distracted by his phone, and caused the accident unintentionally; however, it imposed a severe sentence—six years in prison". Finnish newspapers describe this as corruption—the deceased's widow heads the Kharkiv Regional Commercial Court—which affects Finnish public opinion.

  2. Six years for killing someone – wouldn’t complain. European standard. In Germany up to five years. Don’t see the scandal.

Ukraine do not want more Finnish doing volunteer jobs?

Their own corruption seems to be their biggest enemy.

That’s insane, and extremely short sighted. I feel horrible for anyone who loses their life in a meaningless fashion, but to give this person ANY jail sentence, let alone six long years?

Who would visit such a place given this information?

Edit: Who would visit such a place given this information, let alone volunteer their own time, potentiality their lives, and well being?

there’s too many russian assets in the comments section trying to cause infighting between allies

  6. Blatant corruption. In no civilized country would an accident like this lead to 6 years in prison.

  7. An accident is an accident.  Ukraine needs to have one eye on European relations and the ongoing military and financial support.

  8. Yes, in the rest of Europe you can kill anyone with a car and face no consequences. Ukraine needs to understand that you’re allowed to kill people as long as you do it with a car.

  9. Tragic accident, but even more tragic to sentence the guy to 6 years. While I don’t know the extent of the incident, I seriously doubt the sentence and payments are even remotely worth the price of the signal it sends to foreign volunteers.

It’s a good sign, though, that this has reached the attention of news medias.
I don’t know if the sentencing is a result of corruption, but the story being reported is good for anti-corruption purposes. So before any pro-Russian losers haste to spread nonsense, remember that the mere fact that you’ve heard about this incident and allegation or corruption, means that Ukraine is still levels beyond Russia. That’s the difference. Ukraine can handle criticism and transparency. Russia can’t.
