Wow, very cool but surprised that nobody told them that nuclear-powered submarines already exist

I’m not surprised America has caused a nuclear proliferation boom. We will live in a more dangerous world and I fear we will see a nuclear exchange in my lifetime.

  3. What’s the point? Seoul is that close to the north it’s pretty much a MAD treaty without the nukes Seoul would get levelled by artillery

Building warship is never easy. Building submarine and throw in nuclear power plant is whole new ball game in difficulty and likely the most expensive project Korea is attempting.

But if they succeed, it likely will make North Korea sweat as I doubt they have the capability to detect nuclear subs.

**Estimated Cost of South Korea’s Nuclear Submarine**

The estimated cost for South Korea to build its first nuclear-powered submarine is approximately **$2.5 billion**.

    # Fleet Maintenance Costs

To maintain a fleet capable of having one submarine on station at all times, South Korea would require:

    |**Number of Submarines**|**Total Initial Acquisition Cost**|
    |:-|:-|
    |6 to 9 submarines|$15 billion to $23 billion|

This cost includes the expenses associated with acquiring and maintaining the submarines, ensuring operational readiness and capability.

Nuclear powered subs are still honestly an odd option for south korea imo, its not like theyre looking to project power over long distances nor do they have the need to maintain nuclear armed patrols, so the main benefit of a nuclear sub (endurance) isnt gonna really manifest for them, all while they cost much more to build and maintain. So im curious whats spurred them into going full in on such a program.

    I mean.

S Korea is very capable of building nukes so it’s not a surprise they can build a nuke sub.

China and North Korea would be the only countries against it which is a good thing.

    😂

It gives them ultimate revenge option without relying on USA for protection or revenge nukes.

Canada and a few other nations might buy one or to also

Is the USA going to try to stop this I wonder? They will not want this technology available to the highest bidder. I could see a huge amount of political pressure maybe tariffs and more on SK.
