How do we know Toronto and Vancouver populations are going up still? I would expect Montreal to lag Vancouver and Toronto. But overall the population of the nation is expected to shrink per stats can projections this year.
Given that the Toronto and Vancouver CMAs make up such a huge proportion of our overall population I would be shocked if they were not dramatically slowed at minimum if not flat or in slight decline in line with the overall numbers for the nation.

I imagine some of it is the rush towards secularism. If you can’t follow your religion the way you want to, you move to where you can.
Christians, Muslims, Jews all have ways of demonstrating their religion through clothing and jewelry, now they have to live somewhere else to do so.

Over many years Toronto generally lost people due to internal out migration (mostly to the distant suburbs but also to other provinces) but international in-migration more than made up for it. Now with immigrant numbers declining some of that population dynamic may be more apparent.
