For those who are going to dismiss this once again, don’t you think our doctors should be paid at least equal to 2008 pay? Don’t you think our medical students graduating should actually be able to specialise instead of being stuck in foundation year positions?
Just because you’re paid less, does not mean they don’t deserve more.

When the Doctors agreed to stop striking after their initial pay deal, one of the main points of the deal was that the government would work to pay restoration over the coming years. It took less than a year for the government to do an about turn and give them a pay offer that was **LESS THAN INFLATION.** That is why they’re unhappy and striking. The government broke the terms of the deal.

Yeah. They do. I had a long chat with a trainee registrar recently. They do close to a decades worth of learning and studying for crap pay, crap conditions. You wonder why anyone born in the UK would ever do it. No wonder we take so many of our doctors from people qualified overseas.
Is it annoying that theres constant strikes. Absolutely. I do think healthcare professionals deserve the pay rise.
But. At some point it’ll have to stop. You know the moment reform inevitably win (as Labour cant help but piss everyone off) things arent going to go so great for our NHS staff

the lack of specialty positions is what is absolutely decimating the careers of UK docs. they are forever stuck in what are essentially lower training posts with the pay to match. which also means that although the number of medical students is increasing, the number of new consultants is pretty stagnant, as nobody is getting trained up enough to get there

My **assistant** earns £5 an hour more than me, gets more teaching than me, gets more research opportunities than me – and they should be paid as much as they are, they should get teaching and research opportunities. My profession has been eroded into a shell of what it was and everyone’s health is affected. If you want the NHS to improve you have to pay doctors what they are worth, treat them properly, or else they will leave. So many of us have exit plans because it’s not worth it here any more, but it wouldn’t take much for it to be worth it.

UK doctors compare their salaries to America, but they could also compare them to India or Nigeria. Being a doctor has become so much easier than it used to be, and medical care doesn’t come with the same local jurisdiction requirements a career like law does. There’s no objective reason doctors should be paid more than teachers or builders if the international market and software can fill the gaps. For non-specialist issues AI can likely replace almost all the time wasted on gatekeeping access to many prescription drugs.

It’s the additional pension contributions, new benchmark for the next pay rise negotiation, and a signal to every other public sector union play tough and you will get a massive pay rise. It will be the end of any Labour government and the BMA knows that – so while they have Labour in, get what they can and then moan for another 15 year Tory/Reform term where they will get absolutely nothing. The 2008 benchmark is disingenuous. The gap between private and public sector is getting wider every day, no wonder the working class is moving over to Reform.
