As a former smoker who once tossed all my butts despite being relatively environmentally conscious – what prompted me to learn not to do this was living in a National Park for a summer. I don’t recall exactly how it was communicated or if it was just kind of implicitly understood but all the smokers who worked there with me would always “roll out” the end of the cigarette (being sure to stamp out the embers completely) and pocket the butt.
I was thinking how the best way to teach people new things about deeply ingrained habits is the “[doorway æffect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event_perception)” – such as my cross country move to a National Park – but clearly repeating that isn’t really possible. What is possible, however, would be something like changing the standard packaging for cigarettes. We waste all kinds of cardboard and other packaging materials, I’m sure it would be possible to, for example, add some kind of like half circle thing at the top that says “hey, collect all your butts inside this and throw it away (or recycle, if that’s possible?)”
Creativity works and is a non-negotiable part of society. As is flexibility. That both have been optimized out is a central error.
