  1. I’m kind of shocked that this hasn’t gotten wider distribution here. Half of the largest battery storage facility in California is on fire with no prospect of putting it out.

Moss Landing has two battery storage facilities, one indoors operated by Vistra, and the other outdoors that uses Tesla Megapacks, I think Tesla is the operator of that one. It is the Vistra facility that is on fire. The fire is apparently contained within the building, but the contents, including all the batteries are likely to be writeoffs. That’s 750 MW/3 GWh offline for the forseeable future. As far as I can tell, the Tesla batteries are not yet impacted, and may not be if the fire stays inside the building.

As if that weren’t enough, toxic smoke is drifting across the Monterey Peninsula, and over 1000 people have had to be evacuated, and Highway 1 is closed until the fire is out.

Vistra had another incident with a fire a couple of years ago.

This is bad, really bad, for battery storage.
