Easiest and fairest is to consider weight and mileage for annual registration. This can also solve the gas tax for highway maintenance. Yeah, gas cars will have to pay both ways. Also we have to have a reduction for commercial so big trucks can continue to operate.

  2. >The arms race in vehicle size is also a safety disaster, for other drivers and certainly for pedestrians. The individual logic makes sense: would you want to drive on the same highway as Mr Tinydick’s 7,000lb (3,175kg) Dodge Ram if you’re in a Mini? Of course not – in a collision, the Ram would probably just drive straight over you, like a monster truck rally malfunction. And the driver of a similarly sized vehicle wouldn’t even see a small child in front at close distance. The macro-level effects are deadly. In the US, deaths in car crashes rose by 33% between 2011 and 2021, while pedestrian deaths have risen by 77% since 2010.

    This.

  3. It kind of reminds me of the bit old classic cars in Fallout games, we are building new future tech but want the American big car.

US style cars really only work in countries set up similar to the US. Like Canada and Mexico for example. We have a shit ton of space and open roads.

Doesn’t really work for a situation like Europe. It barely accommodates something the size of a Rav4.

Our main way to commute in the US is a vehicle

  5. What a fucking stupid way to approach this. Part of the reason vehicles are so big now are because of strict safety laws, combined with emission requirements that have weight considerations. Shocker – our safety standards and emissions regs have always been the best in the world.

  6. The trend towards SUVs is getting ridiculous. Several manufacturers have now dropped standard Sedan and Estate/Station Wagon style from lineups in favour of SUVs, which account for 1/3 of sales in the UK and I think Europe.

    It’s self perpetuating though.
People see it being safer to be in an SUV than a small car, so they want an SUV. More SUVs on the road quickens the shift.
The higher driving position is also easier to get in and out of the vehicle.

Manufacturers prefer to sell SUVs as they have a higher markup, and with the trend for new car owners to buy on finance now, mass ownership of flash cars is more accessible. More money for corporate greed. Until recently the Ford Fiesta and Focus were in the top 5 selling cars in the UK and now Ford has discontinued them in favour of the Kuga and Puma compact SUVs.

Yet the Wiki page for the Ford Ranger describes it as a Mid Size SUV. Compared to cars from 15 years ago it would be a large pickup.
Monsters like the Ford F150 can’t even fit on most European roads, garage or car parking spaces. It can’t even fit in some American garages.

SUVs require 30% more materials to manufacture, are less fuel efficient and heavier contributing to more emissions.
Take the Toyota Hilux, the 8th gen 2015 version is 500kg heavier, 20cm wider and 0.5m longer than the 1997 6th gen version.

We’ve reached the limits of what normal roads can accommodate and this is the start of the push back.

  7. Paris – and the rest of Europe – has been ‘noping’ big cars for decades. Petrol, historically has been higher cost than in the U.S, leading to such wonders as the Morris Mini, or the 2 cylinder Citroen that sometimes needed a push up a sharp slope.

  8. Why allow motor vehicles of any kind? But, even a bicycle can easily kill you and pedestrians.

Much safer if we all just stayed home.

  9. Yeah that makes sense, its a compact city with limited room, most USA cities have tons of space, especially the mid sized ones.

  10. Cool, let Paris do whatever it wants for its small cities and let the others do what’s right for them!

  11. I do think a weight tax would do wonders, even in the USA. One thing I’m always surprised by is the proliferation of 3 row SUVs when the avg family is like 4 or less people iirc.

It’s just not manageable to have that amount of privately owned vehicles going through big metropolitan city centers.

1 parking space = 1 car must be enforced
