Trump knows the optics are the shutdown are bad for him, which is why they’re so heavily blaming the Democrats despite Republicans controlling the Senate, House, and the White House. But I also think he *wanted* the shutdown the entire time, as an excuse to gut Democrat-favored programs.
By trying to blame Democrats, he wants his cake and to eat it too.

This is actually a really smart strategy for Dems. Pick a single issue that is deeply unpopular across the spectrum and keep the messaging simple. The MAGA base is lost, but most rational people are not buying the lie that Dems want to provide health insurance to illegals. We need more of this from the Dem leadership.
