A judge in Illinois has blocked the Trump administration from using force against journalists after a lawsuit accused federal agents of using excessive force, including tear-gas, against reporters covering the anti-ICE protests in Chicago.

The federal judge ruled Thursday that federal authorities cannot use tear gas, pepper spray and other weapons against journalists, and that agents are enjoined from dispersing, arresting, threatening or using physical violence against anyone they know to be a journalist.

A group of Chicago journalists had sued the government over the actions of federal agents against reporters covering protests outside Broadview ICE detention facility.

Using force against citizens is a violation of fundamental principles, and the judge is rightly defending the Constitution here.

It’s good to see that the attempted overreach of power was immediately blocked. This should serve as a lesson for future administrations.

The right to protest and freedom of speech cannot be nullified by decree, and this ruling emphasizes that.

  6. Might be a little long winded but here it goes…

LA has its own ICE operation going on, but it hardly that of the scale of what is going on in Chicago right now.

Chicago gangs have already said don’t cross ” | ” or else.

ICE has already pepper sprayed the CPD.

Police officers can get on power trips, but it is usually because they care about the community. They live there, and they care about it. To more than a few PD, ICE are foreign invaders.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if this ICE invasion of Chicago turns really violent. I’d be really worried about entering gang territory.

  7. Why do we need a judge to block government agents performing violence against journalists?

Shouldn’t the offending agents already be detained and charged with assault?

  8. It’s great that the judge says this. But, we have that pesky thing called enforcement. I doubt any of the fascists at the top of DHS or ICE are going to do anything to punish anyone for obvious misconduct.

  9. How is this something a judge even needs to weigh in on?

Is there a law about assaulting innocent people?

Judges have blocked several things lately but Trump keeps on doing them. So call me when he and company finally end up in handcuffs. 🙄

  11. Let’s see when this eventually makes it to the Supreme Court and they unsurprisingly shit on the constitution and give Trump whatever he wants.

Under the First Amendment and its five freedoms are “We” not all journalists?
