Hi, Reddit! We have both closely followed the ongoing government shutdown as part of our reporting on politics and policy.
I (Jonathan Lemire) reported on how Donald Trump might weaponize the shutdown against civil servants, and how he may use it to continue plans started by DOGE.
As for me (Toluse Olorunnipa), my reporting includes Trump’s immediate reaction and possible plans with the shutdown, and the implications Americans may feel on their daily lives, going beyond airport delays and IRS closures.
We’re here to discuss how we got to a shutdown, what the government’s next steps could be, and beyond. Ask us anything!

Can a new Democratic regime post-Trump reverse most of the damage he did to United States foreign policy?
If the shutdown is a big deal, can you A: start reporting on the Hatch Act violations done by the current admin and not use the kid gloves, and B: remind everyone who is currently in control of all the branches of government?
It’s not possible for the democrats to be both incompetent and weak, but also some sort of unstoppable force of terror. The terror is coming from within the administration.
