    # New Chinese battery standards allow the recovery of 99.6% of key materials

China has implemented comprehensive national standards for electric vehicle battery recycling, with pilot programs demonstrating recovery rates exceeding 99% for critical materials including nickel, cobalt, and manganese. The General Administration of Market Supervision has approved five additional standards, bringing the total to 22 standards that cover general requirements, management procedures, and dismantling methods for retired EV batteries.

Some companies are achieving nickel-cobalt-manganese recovery rates of 99.6% and lithium recovery rates of 96.5%, supporting more sustainable battery management practices. A national technical committee is being formed to standardize battery recycling across multiple sectors, including automotive, marine, and energy storage applications.

China is actively contributing to international standardization efforts, with a Chinese-led proposal for battery recycling guidelines approved as an IEC international standard project and nearly 40 Chinese experts participating in international battery technical committees. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has emphasized enforcing mandatory safety standards, including prohibiting the use of retired batteries in applications such as electric bicycles.
