  1. News snippet: Oregon’s Democratic senator Jeff Merkley is giving a marathon speech on the Senate floor that has entered its 16th hour to make the case that Donald Trump is acting as an authoritarian, including by deploying the military into his home town of Portland.

The 68-year-old senator began speaking around 6.20pm on Tuesday evening and continued with few interruptions into Wednesday morning. Standing on the Senate floor alongside placards that read “authoritarianism is here now!” and “Trump is violating the law”, Merkley has paused only to take questions from fellow Democratic senators.

“I’ve come to the Senate floor tonight to ring the alarm bells. We’re in the most perilous moment, the biggest threat to our republic since the civil war. President Trump is shredding our constitution,” Merkley said as he began his speech.

Is there any way I can buy this guy a tea with some honey and lemon? This is old school politics that needs to be acknowledged.

68 years old and up for re-election next year. Maybe a way to stave off primary opponents.

I hate to say it, but he could speak for 16 hours or 16 days or 16 weeks, and it wouldn’t do a damn thing to diminish Trump’s Presidential power in the slightest. His efforts are completely meaningless.

This is simply a piece of performative political theatre that will have zero effect on anything….except his vocal cords.

  5. I am usually happy with my senators from Oregon. Merkley usually not as much as Wyden, but both do good for our state. They are moderate in the right ways and liberal in the right ways. The really do reflect Oregon. I had my parents complain that they are horrible liberal senators for our state. Then I mentioned that if they left office the replacement would be WAY more liberal, maybe even our governor running. That shut them up about that right away.

  6. Is he calling on his colleagues to refuse appointing anymore Trump nominated judges during a shut down?

  7. Democratic leadership has said from the beginning of the shutdown that they would use it as an opportunity to draw attention to Trump’s abuse of power since they can’t do much else. To anyone saying this is useless, I’ve seen coverage of this on most major outlets this morning. This could also be a good way of encouraging republicans to come to the table on the shutdown to avoid this being the current spotlight.

  8. One thing I can say about politicians is they have some stamina when it comes to speeches like this. I’d be over it in 10 minutes 😂

  9. I hope he keeps going forever, in fact have another 50 years of life for the God work he’s doing transferred from the trump supporters they aren’t using it

  10. How many people are even aware that this is happening?

A US Senator is giving a speech on the Senate floor about the rising fascism and authoritarianism in the current US government for 16+ hours and the media is barely mentioning it?

I think that the only US media to even mention this is MSNBC!

This is a big part of why and how things have gone this far in the United States! The media is entirely complicit in our rush to totalitarianism!

  11. ….I don’t think the other side cares. Look how bad they’ve let things get…they don’t care. Got a fancy speech? They don’t care. Have facts to back up everything? They don’t care. Are you out to prove the damage being done on Americans? They don’t care. It goes on and on…we wouldn’t be here today if Republicans actually cared.

  12. Great, they’re doing speeches, how about some leading of their electorate, putting forward ideas, rallying people to marches, sending the message of what democrats are going to do to fix the broken system!

  13. Oregon’s senators are based as fuck. I feel like they represent us incredibly well and in a way that’s unique even among democrats. I know Wyden is a million years old and has been in the senate since about when it was founded but honestly it’s tough to dislike him.

  14. Multiple Dems needs to be doing this 24/7. Rotating in and out so they keep up a constant, unwavering presence.

  15. The list of crimes Trump and his cohorts have committed is long. I can see it taking many hours to explain it all.
