Fascists have been trying to take over the U.S. almost since the inception of Fascism.
In 1933 Fascists plotted to overthrow the U.S. government and replace the President with a Dictator. [The Business Plot (1933)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Plot)
>”When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled ‘made in Germany’; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called fascism; it will be called, of course, ‘Americanism.'” – Halford E. Luccock (1938)
>The symptoms of fascist thinking are colored by environment and adapted to immediate circumstances. But always and everywhere they can be identified by their appeal to prejudice and by the desire to play upon the fears and vanities of different groups in order to gain power. It is no coincidence that the growth of modern tyrants has in every case been heralded by the growth of prejudice. It may be shocking to some people in this country to realize that, without meaning to do so, they hold views in common with Hitler when they preach discrimination against other religious, racial or economic groups. Likewise, many people whose patriotism is their proudest boast play Hitler’s game by retailing distrust of our Allies and by giving currency to snide suspicions without foundation in fact.
>The American Fascists are most easily recognized by their deliberate perversion of truth and fact. Their newspapers and propaganda carefully cultivate every fissure of disunity, every crack in the common front against fascism. They use every opportunity to impugn democracy. They use isolationism as a slogan to conceal their own selfish imperialism.
>They cultivate hate and distrust [of allies]. They claim to be super-patriots, but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. They demand free enterprise, but are the spokesmen for monopoly and vested interest. Their final objective toward which all their deceit is directed is to capture political power so that, using the power of the State and the power of the market simultaneously they may keep the common man in eternal subjection. – Henry A. Wallace, Vice President, USA, 1944.
In 1966 Republican Senator Thomas Kuchel, said of the ‘Conservative’ movement:
>”A fanatical neo-fascist political cult in the GOP, driven by a strange mixture of corrosive hatred and sickening fear, who are recklessly determined to either control our party, or destroy it.”
Today Fascists firmly control the GOP. Their goal now is to either control our country, or destroy it.

In most cases when the act was invoked it was with support of the states governor.
A better question is when was Insurrection Act invoked over the objection of a states governor.
Only five (5) presidents have invoked the Insurrection Act six (6) times over the objection of a states governor
1861 – Lincoln – Confederate states To suppress secession and rebellion after governors rejected federal authority (Civil War).
1894 – Grover Cleveland – Illinois To break the Pullman railroad strike after the governor opposed federal troop deployment.
1957 – Eisenhower – Arkansas To enforce school desegregation in Little Rock against Governor Faubus’s obstruction.
1962 – JF Kennedy – Mississippi To enforce federal court order admitting James Meredith to the University of Mississippi.
1963 – JF Kennedy – Alabama To enforce school desegregation at the University of Alabama over Governor Wallace’s protest.
1965 – LB Johnson – Alabama To protect civil rights marchers in Selma after Governor Wallace refused to act.

The courts have no enforcement mechanism by design. The rule of law in this country is predicated on an societal agreement that we will abide by rulings, especially when it comes to the executive and legislative branches. When a bad actor controls the designed enforcement mechanism and simply dismisses that agreement, any illusion that this isn’t a totalitarian state is gone.
Trump knows this, largely because people are telling him this truth. With his gut instinct we’d already be under the Insurrection Act. What’s different between Trump 1.0 and 2.0 is, in the first term, he had adults in the room. Now he’s got the likes of Bondi, Vought, and Miller, who aren’t advising him to not use the act, but to time it strategically. But Trump is impatient so it gets talked about often these days as they get us used to troops in our cities.
So think about timing and I see this all coming to a head at the mid-terms. There is zero chance that Trump would let either chamber go to the Democrats. None. Voter intimidation, ignoring the court, manipulation, rejection of ballots, etc. will happen to ensure an outcome. They’d just prefer to, as Trump says, “do it in a nicer manner.” Kevin Roberts, Heritage Foundation…”we are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.” This is exactly what Trump is trying to make happen.

Here’s how it will play out:
1. He can’t do that.
2. He’ll do it anyway.
3. Someone will sue.
4. A district court will issue a TRO
5. He’ll appeal
6. The appeals court will uphold the TRO
7. He’ll appeal to SCOTUS
8. SCOTUS will ask themselves: “Was this an ‘official act’?”
9. SCOTUS will decide that “Why, yes it was an official act; so it’s Okie-Dokie”.
Done.
