> The longest shutdown took place during Trump’s first term and lasted 35 days from December 2018 to January 2019.
I wonder what the common denominator is between then and now?

Congrats to Trump —his inability to properly lead his government has led to the longest government shutdown in American history.
One more “stat” in the history books for America’s Dictator to be “proud of”.

The government has been shut down a total of 126 days ever.
Trump was president for 73 of them.
Trump is responsible for 57% of all government shut down days.

It’s ironic that Trump, who prides himself as this amazing businessman and negotiator, has now twice failed so spectacularly to negotiate with his own government that he’s caused the government to shut down for an unprecedented amount of time.
But then, I guess there’s not much incentive for Trump to actually negotiate, is there? He doesn’t give a shit about the suffering of others so it’s not like his conscience will compel him, and he can just say “It’s the Dems’ fault” and his base will believe him.

Is anyone surprised the anti-government party is letting the government be shutdown, it’s exactly what they want. If it wasn’t for the bad optics of letting people go unpaid and unfed, I would assume the GOP would never work to open it back up.

Republicans are promising to negotiate *after* Dems first pass the bill with massive cuts Republicans want.
Which means they won’t negotiate at all.
Why Dems are not putting this front-and-center on every appearance is baffling.
