Anyone not on the far right in America gets painted as a radical socialist/ communist by the media and critics.

    It’s always been fear-mongering nonsense

European elections these days are actually contested between a conservative and white nationalist party but it’s nice to play pretend I guess.

  3. dannysleepwalker on

Yeah as a European I see him as centre-left. He hasn’t suggested anything radical.

It’s just that the US is shifted so fucking far right compared to the rest of the world that centre-left is considered turbo-communist.

  4. People need to realize that to most Europeans, the mainstream left in America are right wing in Europe. The “radical left” here in America would be considered center left in Europe, so of course his policies are seen as normal. All other developed counties have policies such as those.

  5. In my province in Canada we have a Progressive Conservative party in power that is to the left of the Democrats on many issues

A caveat to this. As a European, a lot of countries in Europe have been becoming steadily more capitalist and have moved to the right over the past couple of decades. Our welfare states are becoming slowly dismantled. I’m afraid a lot of us still believe in our reputation as more progressive without realising the damage that has been and is being done.

These policies are, increasingly, not that normal anymore.

  7. A democrat coworker called Mamdani a communist the other day, and that if they take over “x, y, and z” would happen.

Its crazy to me how scared people are of policies that would benefit everyone.

  8. Yeah, exactly. And America is 100% not fucking normal right now even by its own standards. I would kill to have a taste of the things that are ‘normal’ in every other developed country

  9. Hi! I am a Dutch NYer having spent about equal time on both sides and voting in both elections.

This is totally not true at all in the Netherlands.

We even have news coverage asking if someone as left d Mamdami could rise here.

  10. Americans by and large are so completely ignorant of and insulated from international society that they don’t even know what real leftism looks like. There are countless stories of American tourists being blindsided by foreign customs and the general lack of “premium” options, especially in Europe because Europeans generally *actually* believe in equal, quality treatment for everyone. Americans can’t fathom that because our culture has deeply-ingrained wealth-based hierarchical values that much of the rest of the world does not share.

  11. I’m British-born, and Mamdani would be seen as a centrist in the UK. Literally nothing he ran on is particularly out there.

  12. Norway here. I had to check out his platform out of curiosity. None of his policies would be seen as radical here. He would barely considered left wing here, more so centre left. We have implemented many of his policies (or variations of his policies) a long time ago.

We actually have extreme left wing parties here. The policies of these parties would send Americans into hysteria. Zohran Mamdani is by no means on the radical left by our standards.

  13. It’s neoliberal late stage capitalism that’s the real abnormality. We’ve just been conditioned into having to accept it  or otherwise tolerate it.

But ultimately it’s intolerable, degrading not only the quality of life for most people, but the very habitability of our planet.

  14. That’s nonsense. People need to stop acting like America’s far left are just center-right on the global stage. An analysis done by actual political scientists analyzing party platforms and actions in government by dozens of political parties across dozens of democratic countries found that the Democratic Party is firmly center-left, on par with many other center-left parties in the world. The Republican Party is substantially more right-wing than mainstream conservative parties in other countries, though.

Wanting the systems in place in your country to actually work for people who pay taxes is not radical

Having an oligarchy that works for .01% of the population is fucking radical

  16. Lilsammywinchester13 on

Anyone who studies politics at a world wide scale would realize both the Republican and democratic parties are “right” compared to European countries

  17. If the government doesn’t do anything to help it’s people then what is the fucking purpose?

  18. Europeans and many educated Canadians, might I add.

This is just fear-mongering at its finest because the average American does not even know what Communism and Socialism properly mean and end up confusing both. It’s like their kryptonite lmfao.

  19. I visited Savannah from Canada during, I believe, Obama’s second term. While having cocktails in the lobby of our small hotel on Chippewa Square, a nice couple from NYC asked us to explain how socialized medicine worked in Canada and if we B liked it. We replied that it works… fine, and that we like it. Always room for improvement.

The night manager of the hotel was listening and I could sense he was growing restless. He literally turned bright red with rage and started screaming at us about communists and death panels. There was no talking to him. It felt like if I tried to explain why we liked the system, he would’ve punched me.

    It really was quite extraordinary.

Color me shocked that people who support the party of pedophiles takes issue with the idea of universal child care.

If Mamdani were an honest man he would explain the differences btwn what he actively supports in Uganda and Dubai and so on and what he envisions for NYC.
He hasn’t done this and it should be very alarming.
