Zohran Mamdani doesn’t want you to shop at Starbucks right now.

The New York City mayor-elect is urging people not to patronize the iconic coffee chain while baristas remain on strike.

“Starbucks workers across the country are on an Unfair Labor Practices strike, fighting for a fair contract,” Mamdani wrote on X on Thursday evening. “While workers are on strike, I won’t be buying any Starbucks, and I’m asking you to join us.”

  2. Funny out here in Downtown Ventura there is Secret Garden, Palm and Boy, Caje, Kaapicat, Palermo, and also Cafe Fiore which is more of a restaurant but still has amazing coffee, and Starbucks is still the busiest on this strip. Wild to me, but I feel like it’s the same thing with most other things like beer. There may be so many beers available but if Modelo is what you drink it’s Modelo you are getting.

As the child of a union member, I remember early lessons about never crossing a picket line. You just didn’t do it. Same at the VFW where my father was a member. There was a USS Indianapolis survivor as a member. You offer him your seat, he pays for nothing, kids mowed his lawn for free, and that was just a societal norm. I’m a union member today. Mamdani is an ally. Whether it’s a literal or figurative picket line, you don’t cross it. These are rather classic union beliefs and good to see a political figure embracing what it means to support workers.

  4. Always support the workers on the picket line!

But when I was on strike people showed support by bringing us a lot of Starbucks coffee.  What do we bring the Starbucks picket line? 👀

been boycotting starbucks for the 29 years ive been on this earth, not for amything but their mediocre, ridiculously overpriced coffee

  7. Important notes about this:

    * You aren’t being asked to give up coffee
    * You aren’t being asked to never go to Starbucks again
    * You aren’t being asked to hold a sign and march in front of a store

Low-stakes asks like this are how you action happens. Asking someone to give up everything is too much. People can route around with a small ask though. I can go to a different store to get coffee. I can wait until the strike is over to go back to Starbucks.

  8. Fuck Starbucks. Their answer to declining sales was to make their employees wear boring uniforms.

  9. I actually like Starbucks, but I’m boycotting as long as they are practicing Union busting techniques. If that means I never go there again, then so be it.

Establishment Dems/media: “one of the baristas at my local chain is Jewish, so this is clearly antisemitic.”

MAGA: “we’ve always loved Starbucks, unlike those woke anti-red cup liberals.”
