Trump and everyone around him are stupid, but they are somewhat savvy when it comes to manipulating media cycles and dangling shiny objects in front of MAGA, so I’m actually kind of shocked at just how badly they’ve handled this whole situation even by their own standards.
They allowed MAGA influencers to run wild with conspiracy theories, they hosted that silly press conference in which they gave out “Phase 1” binders full of stuff that had already been released and suggesting there might be a “Phase 2” release, and they never came up with a unifying, consistent explanation for Trump’s involvement in the whole thing – “the Epstein files are on my desk, they don’t exist, stop talking about them, they exist but a lot of Democrats are in them, Trump was actually an undercover informant working to take the whole thing down,” etc.
They have consistently made the worst possible decision at every opportunity, and if everyone around him weren’t so incompetent I’d suspect someone is trying to sabotage his administration.
