I doubt his team would have ever allow it to be open. These press wrestling matches only work when Trump has a huge advantage over the other person and they must be deferential to him. The only thing he has on Mamdani is federal funding, which would spark an economic war with one of the wealthiest and oldest states in the union. Anything like this would be a huge boost for Mamdani as well. He is probably going to pull some of it anyway, so Mamdani essentially has nothing to lose and is just doing this to show he’s reasonable.
