the comments on this press conference by liberals are bizarre. Trump does this with pretty much anyone who visits, the exception being Zelensky. Even then, he asked Zelensky later if he could hit Moscow.
Whether he meant to do this or not, Trump made the Democrat establishment look terrible for not immediately embracing Mamdani and aligned himself with a popular message (affordability).
My theory: Trump knows his support is cratering, with all time low polls and even some Republicans pulling back. But Trump is a man who has a desperate need to be liked. He knows the one thing that can turn it all around and make him popular again is **if he actually delivers on affordability**. He’s even been actually talking about it recently.
Then in comes Zohran, good looking, generationally talented and charismatic, and the “hot new thing” in politics. All traits that Trump gravitates towards and wants to be associated with. Then, Zohran turns on the charm and starts finding common ground.
They find common ground in shitting on establishment Dems and the media. In being anti-establishment populists who suddenly shook up politics as outsiders. In being two guys from Queens who love New York.
Then Zohran starts talking about working with Trump to achieve the one thing that can save his popularity. He comes in with actual good ideas and a genuine burning desire to deliver on affordability. Trump realizes Mamdani is not like other politicians and isn’t here to play political games.
The one and singular thing Mamdani is focused on also happens to be the one thing that Trump knows will make people him. Their interests are aligned.
