This is the Art of the Deal strategy – escalate to negotiate. Trump applies this to every situation. He starts with imperious crazy demands and threats, name calling, and bluster. Then, when he gets to the meeting, he appears to soften, conciliate, and flatter. He claims to have formed a deep personal relationship with his opponent. He thinks this will evoke a reciprocal sympathetic reaction, which will make them more willing to negotiate and concede things. “Oh, Trump just misunderstood me, now he sees what I’m really saying, and maybe he’ll help. I think I can work with him.” I think he expects some kind of Stockholm Syndrome will emerge where the victim will begin to identify with him and come to support him because of the power of his charisma and gestures of goodwill. Of course, this never works and is why he’s the absolute worst negotiator of all time.

I bet it’s not the suit, I think that Trump is genuinely charmed by actual human contact. Everything in his life has been fake, a lie or some sort of crime. I think when he gets around a genuine human, he can revert to genuine human behavior.
