Trump has fixated on this because he relies on the military to project strength internationally and domestically. Like any banana republic dictator, perceived control of the military is essential for legitimacy (and defending against a coup).
If the military leadership rose up publicly against their deployment against US citizens or fighting an illegal war in Venezuela, than the last true check of his power would unravel his authority and threaten his ability to run over the Congress and Courts.
It’s sad that we’re down to military leadership doing the job none of our other institutions have been able to do – putting the Constitution above authoritarianism.
