“You’ve made so clear how you want to keep drugs out of the U.S., can you say more about why you would pardon a notorious drug trafficker?” asked one reporter”

“Well, I don’t know who you’re talking about,” Trump replied. It was not a particularly comforting response after the president previously revealed [he has no idea who he’s pardoning](https://newrepublic.com/post/202183/donald-trump-pardons-cryptocurrency-ally). After the reporter clarified that she was asking about Hernández, Trump scrambled to justify his decision.”

“Well, I was told—I was asked by Honduras, many of the people of Honduras, they said it was a Biden setup—I don’t mean Biden, look, Biden didn’t know he was alive—but it was the people that surround the Resolute Desk. Surround Biden, when he was there, which was about very little time,” Trump ranted.”

“The people of Honduras really thought he was set up and it was a terrible thing. He was the president of the country, and they basically said he was a drug dealer because he was the president of the country. And they said it was a Biden administration setup. And I looked at the facts and I agreed with them.”

“What evidence can you share that he was set up and that he wasn’t—?” the reporter asked, before being interrupted by Trump, who had no such evidence to share.”

“But Hernández wasn’t imprisoned simply for being the president of Honduras.”

” In 2021, U.S. federal prosecutors presented an [array of evidence](https://www.dea.gov/press-releases/2021/03/30/former-honduran-congressman-tony-hernandez-sentenced-distributing-tons#:~:text=On%20Feb.,scheduled%20for%20June%2022%2C%202021.&text=In%20addition%20to%20the%20prison,in%20charge%20of%20the%20prosecution.) connecting the former foreign leader to the drug-trafficking activities of his brother, Juan Antonio “Tony” Hernandez Alvarado, who was sentenced to life in prison for importing at least 185,000 kilograms of cocaine, securing bribes to public officials, as well as other weapons and false statement offenses.”

” Prosecutors had [described](https://www.dea.gov/press-releases/2021/03/30/former-honduran-congressman-tony-hernandez-sentenced-distributing-tons#:~:text=On%20Feb.,scheduled%20for%20June%2022%2C%202021.&text=In%20addition%20to%20the%20prison,in%20charge%20of%20the%20prosecution.) the former president as being involved in a “violent, state-sponsored drug trafficking conspiracy.”

How much money has exchanged hands over this because obviously Trump does nothing for free.

  3. The number of pardons and forgiveness of the money the convicted owed is mind boggling. As of June it was $1.3 billion dollars according to
    Axios.

Trump has forgiven $1.3 billion dollars of debt.

  4. >“Well, you take a look. I mean, they could say that you take any country you want; if somebody sells drugs in that country, that doesn’t mean you arrest the president and put him in jail for the rest of his life,” Trump babbled.

Well, according to the Trump administration, the proper response is to bomb the suspected country and possibly invade it to overthrow their government instead…

  5. I dunno, “spirals” to me kind of implies he’s going to eventually hit a rock bottom. I think that pit has no floor whatsoever.

    >”…if somebody sells drugs in that country, that doesn’t mean you arrest the president and put him in jail for the rest of his life,” Trump babbled. “And that includes this country, OK?”…

What an odd thing to say.

Trump has always had soft spot for criminals especially if they’re connected or wealthy.

Does he think this makes it sound good to anybody? Regardless of whether this pardon was right or wrong, even taken at face value this explanation is still awful and a complete betrayal. Trump is so “America First” that he listens to the Honduran people at all, and takes their word over US law enforcement.

  10. And History repeats itself. Remember Ronald Reagan fueled the coke/crack epidemic from Nicaragua to South Central LA and beyond. Follow the money.

Interesting…. Isn’t this exactly what he’s trying to do with Maduro and Venezuela?

  12. A reporter should go to Honduras and interview random common people about their pardoned president. Riding a motorcycle on the street with a camera person. Stop one guy, then another, then ride 2 miles away to stop another person. Go somewhere where it is really crowded and pull a person out of a crowd. The goal is 100 people. Let’s say this was a liberal town. Go to a conservative area. Interview people there. Unfiltered. Blur their faces. Show the truth.

Somehow I knew “I didn’t know who I was pardoning” was going to be it again.

  14. because he is profiting from the sale of pardons either in money or political capitol.

Man, it’s so fucking easy to get a pardon from Trump. Just tell him that Biden set you up and he’ll let you out in a heartbeat. He is so god damn fucking stupid.

Apparently Biden is a jury who unfairly convicts rich drug dealers now. That Biden, so tricky. But also doesn’t know who he is.

It’s a very confusing time to be Trump right now.
