Of course he does, none of them think they should have to pay taxes. Remember what Leona Helmsley said, “Only little people pay taxes”. Wealthy & powerful people are not “little people”.

  2. > slap a one-time, 5% tax on roughly 200 Californians worth more than $1 billion to “replace lost federal dollars and protect essential services,”

Nah that is stupid. We need permanent solutions, not one-time heists.

  3. This guy is the equivalent of a never trumper republican. I can be glad someone like Romney or Adam K or Liz Cheney exist despite me disagreeing with them on a lot but their utility is in deradicalizing other conservatives, not leading a meaningful political revolution. As long as the DNC puts forward tepid centrists Dems will continue to be controlled opposition and we’ll just have another Trump in 4-10 years

  4. Tired of politicians, Republicans and Democrats, beholden to Billionaires. Financial support from capitalists says you don’t represent the people.

  5. Newsom trying to block a billionaire tax makes him look out of touch. People are tired of watching the richest keep their break while everyone else deals with higher bills. You expect a governor to back a plan that brings in needed revenue, not protect folks who already have every advantage.

  6. People are really going to support this Republican loser just because he shapeshifts and has a D next to his name?

Hopefully the people who got suckered in by his social media team mocking Trump start to see he is *not* the candidate for 2028.

Newsom literally said that a wealth tax would be unfair lol. Like a tax system that allows the very rich to avoid paying their fair share of taxes is somehow fair.

The one big promise he made to Californians was to build more housing. He failed utterly, we have lower housing being built than ever.

When given an opportunity to turn a bankrupt private utility into a public utility, he opted instead to meet with lobbyists from said private utility at a michelin star restaurant and we now have the highest electricity bills in the US.

He’s scared of upsetting donors but that’s why we’re in this mess in the first place. He will put americans last on his list of priorities. He’s not suitable to us, but the elite will want him to win.

I’m legit worried for the country if he is president because California now has the highest effective poverty rate in the US thanks to him.

This is a strong indicator that Gavin is not the one for the job. Centrism in favor of billionaires and status quo for everyone else is a disqualifying position to take nowadays.

People forgot that Newsom vetoed Universal Medi-Cal for Californians. He’s not a good candidate for presidency. He’ll push more of the same and then people will vote for another crazy like Trump again.

Americans want change which is why Trump won so much people. He ran on fake populism.

  11. I can think of many worse choices but I do not like Newsom. If he’s the candidate I will begrudgingly vote for him but I won’t be happy about it.

Omg. Gavin will lose big to a Republican if he runs for president. Not only is he a pro corporate establishment Democrat, but also lives in California, making it easy to paint him as an elite.

We need Andy Beshear, and he is from my state—Kentucky. He is a progressive Democrat who knows how to appeal to conservatives, and is from a conservative southern red state. It will be hard to paint Beshear as an elite, and it would be easy for Beshear to paint Trump Jr. as an elite. Even though Beshear hasn’t necessarily been open about it, I could see Beshear get behind a billionaire tax. Beshear has proposed multiple budgets that has stuff in it that Bernie Sanders supports, only for his budgets to get defeated by the Republican legislature.

I commented on an earlier post that Newsom’s grandstanding against Trump and matching Trump’s energy reminded me of Andrew Cuomo (during the pandemic) and got downvoted to hell for it. I think Newsom is the exact same kind of wealthy, elite narcissist as Trump and Cuomo, rhetoric notwithstanding.

Nobody in this thread read the article. First, it’s the NY post, a Murdoch rag. Second he never said anything.

    > Dan Newman, a political adviser opposing the campaign to tax billionaires, said Newsom is against a plan to slap a one-time, 5% tax on roughly 200 Californians worth more than $1 billion to “replace lost federal dollars and protect essential services,” as described by the campaign’s website.

  15. As a California for overn30 yrs, Newsom is an elitist sellout. He’s got too much baggage to make it to presid….we’ll, looking at 2025, nvm it’s anything goes these days.

  16. Tankies going all in on bashing without even reading the actual story. It’s a one single time tax on some 200 people who will get a huge bill from the government out of nowhere

As a California resident of the Bay Area, I can say with certainty that Gavin Newsom is as slippery as two handfuls of hair gel and has as much substance as an empty Italian suit. We need a candidate with cajones willing to fight for regular people, the billionaires have all they need and more. Fuck this guy sideways.

  18. SoWokeIdontSleep on

Good job subreddit, you fell for it, hook, line and sinker, Gavin hasn’t said shit, this is propaganda by the NY post.
This is why we lose, we fall for right wing propaganda just as much as MAGA

  19. Kendal_with_1_L on

I was downvoted to hell for calling him a Republican in sheep’s clothing. Y’all never learn.

  20. I would like one person in this thread to look me in the eye and tell me you’d support taxes on unrealized capital gains. This Newsom article is misleading and he does support taxing billionaires but the conversation thats missing is CAPITAL GAINS.

  21. Ohh the poor billionaires can’t pay anymore taxes! How will their afford their lifestyle???

As we start to look for candidates for 2028 we really need to stop looking for the 100% perfect in every aspect we want candidate. We democrats screw ourselves over with the “I like these 5 things, but because of this one thing, I can’t vote for them”.

We lost this round to trump because to many people decided they couldn’t vote for harris because of one thing or another, instead of realizing and biting the bullet to save us from trump.

So is it disappointing to hear that newsom has some bad ideas, yes, but will he be better than JD or trump jr? Probably!
