He is. Because the Netflix deal would place CNN under a privately held company spun off from WBD. That company would begin the process of transitioning from legacy cable to digital streaming and be free from shareholder and political pressure that Trump would want to place on it.
Trump hates CNN, he tried to torpedo the WB-A&TT merge years ago because of CNN; and he wants CNN to be leashed and controlled by him or one of his allies.

Even for the Ellison’s it seems like they are over paying here, and with the cable side not even being included on the Netflix deal I can’t tell if they are just ego tripping on getting pushed out, or are trying to accelerate a sale with this added pressure to get a chance at picking up the spun off division quicker, while they will still have regulatory support from this admin.
The thing the Ellison’s, Trump, and now Kushner all seem keen on is CNN more specifically, and the legacy TV media infustructure more broadly. For all the talk about how outdated and behind the times things like CNN are, it continues to be shown that this institutions still hold a large amount of sway, especially with the less tuned in general public. I wonder if this is really all this bloviating is about.
