I know this has been a busy week in news, but I’m surprised this isn’t getting more attention.
Mr “Half the country are takers” is admitting the wealthy isn’t paying their fair share. All that “trickle down” BS…he’s admitting it’s BS.

I am suspicious of Romney’s gradual evolution but if it’s all sincere, I am all for it.

Easier to say this after you’ve left your position to really make any change. Fuck these people.

Google paid a 14% effective tax rate last year. They spent $62 billion on stock buybacks. The wealthiest 1% own 51% of all stocks outstanding. The wealthiest 10% own 91% of all stocks outstanding.
How is this system sustainable?

Either an oligarch surtax or re-instatement of the inheritance tax, or both. Americans can take back government only after oligarchs have moved on.

Love it when politicians become men of the people when they retire and lose the ability to actually make a change

it’s not about sincere, IMHO. it’s “hey, I’m a logical centrist” mask to differentiate from MAGA. the left is having it’s own too with your centrist DEMs, except that’s where the Both Sides breaks down because one is unapologetically anti social good rit large and their argument is on how much the royalty should bear responsibility and the other is at least attempting to make the most people have the most access to bettering their lives and the argument is over how much they should expect.
I suspect he very well may be sincere, but it’s more about trying to bolster a “Centrist” counter play. Don’t forget, he may pay lip service to chill handsoff social issues but he’s fiscally conservative all the way.

Here we go lmao I argued on this sub as he came and went again and again, saying something which got him the bare min praise because the bar was so low because thats all it took, then he’d do some bullshit again or not endorse someone, that’d get explained away. I’m sitting this one out, people refuse that the party itself paved the way to trump and didnt stop their peers or speak out until trump was first in office, despite their own voting records to hurt people, despite the racist shitty way they also speak.

Never forget he helped usher in all the dark money that accelerated corporate and foreign influence into our system. We are in this situation largely due to Republicans like Romney.

Just like climate change has f*cked us up, it’s too late to make things right with how unbalanced wealth distribution is in this country.
The fact that 50 year mortgages are even a THOUGHT for how to make housing affordable to the NON 1% is horrifying.

Something he never said for all the years he was a US Senator . There is nothing more courageous than a retired Republican politician.

I remember spending 2012 stressing about this man becoming president (and to be clear I’m still happy he wasn’t). Such innocent and simple times.

Sure is a shame he couldn’t have run on that philosophy when he ran for president in twenty fucking twelve. He knows the debt is completely unsustainable and made greatly worse by republican politicians.

It’s easy to read this and start pearl clutching that the government is going to tax you more and everyone wants that but this is why these discussions need to happen earnestly and not through sound bites and headlines. It’s not all about entitlements. Much of the debt is interest on past spending, and defense. Sure, the entitlements could use course correction but a lot of new revenue can be raised from closing tax loopholes. A lot!
