I was listening to an interview with a victim’s lawyer. After spending weeks redacting Trump’s name, the DOJ contacted him yesterday and gave him 5 hours to say if the victims want their names protected.

* A not-insignificant but very vocal chunk of Trump’s base will support him no matter what.
* Eventually, the GOP will fall in line behind Trump out of fear.
The only questions that remain, in my mind, are exactly what arguments the GOP are going to use to downplay the scandal and continue to support Trump. I mean, I’m sure that right now we’re going to get the usual “I haven’t seen the files yet” excuses from Mike Johnson and other senior leadership, but they’re eventually going to have to coalesce around an excuse as to why Trump is somehow absolved from responsibility for his actions and why they continue to support him, and I’m curious about what that excuse will be and the mental gymnastics it’ll take to get there.
Reporters should be hammering representatives with questions like “Do you believe that the President is still fit to serve after evidence has been released of him allegedly sexually assaulting young girls and being named directly by Epstein as an active co-conspirator? If so, what makes you believe he is still fit to serve? Do you plan on holding hearings asking Trump to explain this evidence?” But we all know that will never happen.
My personal guess is that the excuse is going to be something along the lines of “The DOJ has been sitting on this evidence for many years. If this evidence were damning against Trump or anybody else, the DOJ under Biden certainly would have filed charges against these people years ago. If even a Biden-led DOJ reviewed all of this evidence and opted not to file charges, that alone should tell you there’s no actual evidence of wrongdoing outside of unfounded accusations and prison talk.” and just leave it at that.
