These governors and grid operators all need to stop letting Trump stand on third base and claim he hit a triple. There is no one in the country including President Trump that thinks these are a national security threat. That’s just a fig leaf he’s using, and he freely admits it.

They’re better off appealing to the courts and to Congress, and to the people of their states with a clear description of the trouble this decision is going to cause, and that President Trump’s favorite petulant issue is the source of it. Coming to him asking to prove his fig leaf is a fig leaf is a pointless exercise in giving the child what he wants — attention.

Congress can overrule this with a discharge petition. Courts can rule the decision invalid and press the administration to turn them off, with cause, instead of defaulting to off and forcing the states to turn them back on. There are national security court rooms that do this all the time. The people of the states affected could have a line added to their bills entitled “Trump energy tax” with the added cost of dealing with this, and a flyer indicating that the extra expense is due solely to the president’s personal tantrum with the Scottish government just shy of 15 years ago. The Trump administration has done similar — labeled all sorts of things to smear someone or something, state governments and utilities can do the same in return.
