I can give some insight. I grew up one school district away from where he went to school and we graduated high school the same year. Given where I worked in high school I worked with a few people who went to high school with him and knew him. I’m still friends with two of those people and over the years have met a couple more people who knew him back then.
They all say the same thing or repeat what people who also knew him back then say. He’s full of shit. Hillbilly Elegy was mostly bullshit. A lot of kids there lived the same type of life with broken homes, drugs (Vice even did a special specifically about opioids in Middletown) and other issues commonly associated with the lower middle class to poor. Yeah, he lived with his grandma and grandpa but his grandpa had a pension from AK Steel but he wasn’t doing that bad in comparison to others around him. Two people I know have said they were at his house weekly and never saw the things he talked about in the book or that were shown in the movie. They also have said he was a pretty normal person back then and wasn’t remarkable in any way.
Yeah, he joined the Marines and got out of there, but he’s sold his soul somewhere along the way and the real reason is why. Some of those who’ve known him don’t think money and power is the only reason. Something happened where he’s being told to play puppet or things will come out about him.
