  1. I don’t know how much truth there is the Somali fraud thing but it would be stupid to not draw a line between it and Walz not standing _now_

  2. East-Will1345 on

I’m not sure why we can’t learn what they seem to already know: There are no consequences anymore. By November, this story will be long gone. I’m not condoning whatever he did or didn’t do, but democrats cannot just step away every time MAGA blows a story up in the headlines. They’re extremely good at that. They will always find something.

  3. ApprehensiveTry5660 on

This is one of those points where you hear people talk about how willingly Democrats will cannibalize each other on purity tests, and then look across the aisle to see Matt Gaetz getting nominated for Attorney General.

    Wild dichotomy.

I don’t know at this point if I prefer the inept or corrupt path, but they’re starting to feel like Lucy and Charlie Brown kicking at a ball of ideological purity while the other team runs up the score on the Constitution.

  4. UltraviolentLemur on

Unreal level of incompetence here- he thinks he’s helping, he’s not- he’s only giving his incredibly corrupt detractors more ammunition, and from what? A single influencer turned pseudo-journalist’s smear campaign? This time it wasn’t even snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, Walz had to manufacture the defeat himself.

  5. I’m disappointed to see that this is all the fight you have in you walz. Shameful use of his position to cower instead of lead.

  6. CurlOfTheBurl11 on

Ridiculous. Republicans create a hoax “scandal”, and a Democrat pays for it. Why any Democrats were calling for Walz to step down over this bullshit is beyond me. They’ve now cleared the way for the fucking My Pillow guy to become governor in Minnesota. Nice work, idiots.

  7. Fucking pathetic move, I feel so fucking hopeless. They’re so fucking scared of losing to the MyPillow guy in what’s likely to be a Blue Wave year that they have to drive out one of the most popular, effective, and relatable politicians they have? Based on a bunch of bullshit fabricated by Republicans?

I’m beyond hopeless about our prospects as a nation going forward and shit like this just really cements it. There is no one standing up to go on offense, it’s all about pandering and subjugation in a vain attempt to get voters who will never ever swing.

You can’t beat fascism with cowardice, refuse to be held to a standard to which they don’t even hold themselves. Don’t play their games, rise above and strike back.

  8. Absolute insanity. Governor of one of the best states in the union and stepping down because he can’t take anymore MAGA hate?

At this point Democrats just deserve to fucking lose. No one has a fucking spine.

  9. Thickly_Taurus on

Like it or not, justified or not, he has been painted with this scandal. Major props to him for recognizing he is a political albatross now. It’s an awareness absent in Biden, and those propping him up.

Klobuchar wants the Presidency, she will run for Gov as that is a traditional route for advancement. She will demolish the MyPedo guy.

  10. FreeSeaSailor on

Fuck y’all man. He’s fucking 61 and has been getting harassed for the better part of a year plus now. Trump has now claimed this man helped murder a fucking politician from his state. On top of this dumbass daycare “fraud” scandal.

If you’ve seen any of the footage coming out of those daycares, you can understand why a 61 year old man is throwing in the towel and choosing to remove himself from all the bullshit.

  11. The president is also amplifying horrific conspiracy theories that Walz had Hortman killed, despite it being one of the president’s fans who did it. Along with all the fraud scrutiny, It’s possible that Walz is just worn down after the last couple years.
If Klobuchar or Ellison jump in, a Democrat will be the governor of Minnesota.

  12. The democrats don’t know how to deal with liars and charlatans. They have no backbone. Walz got destroyed by Vance in the vice presidential candidacy because Vance was a smooth liar and didn’t know how to respond. We need LBJ type politicians to deal with this.

  13. Maybe he’s just a good person sick of dealing with bullshit and putting his family through it. I honestly believe the ppl we need in politics most are the ppl who want nothing to do with it for the vast majority of politics. Now you need a lot of money, be willing to put your family at risk, your livelihood, your reputation, all to get there and probably be under the thumb of the establishment and corporate donors. The only way I see the US turning around is a significant revolution at this point. No one gets consequences for anything

  14. Ironically, Rick Scott was the CEO of a healthcare company that committed medicare fraud and paid one of the largest settlements ever at $1.7 billion. He was let go with a $300 million severance package. He subsequently has been Governor and Senator of Florida despite his failed/ corrupt leadership. Republicans love corruption when it’s them doing it.

  15. 2 things:

I’m okay with someone backing away from the table when they’ve had enough and lack the will to continue. Especially at his age.

He has done, what we asked some of the other leaders-Biden- to do. He stepped down early enough to allow someone else to run.

There was a very real possibility that he didn’t beat his opponent because of this scandal—real or imagined.

3 things actually. People really do have to stop with the bad faith and lazy* purity tests. You are not your worse moment. It’s important to remember that.

  16. imthewalrus610 on

People in the comments need to take it easy on Walz instead of lobbing insults at him for not being “brave” or whatever. He’s done about as much as you could expect as Governor. He strikes me as someone sick of politics, especially when he has to deal with ridiculous accusations. I think he’s just tired. I think even his kids got harassed.

  17. Republicans can do literally anything and not lose support.

But we’ll drop support for a candidate who cheers onstage or literally does nothing wrong.

    We’re our own worst enemy.

    It’s such a joke.

We need to stop demanding a perfect candidate and learn to be ok with whomever can win at this point against literally a bunch of Satans.

  18. Politics these days is not the same as when he ran his first campaign in ‘07. The toll public service takes on you is unfathomable.

Minnesota isn’t Massachusetts- his reelection was never guaranteed. The stress a real campaign puts on you takes years off your life.

This was his way out after nearly 20 years of valiant service. I can’t blame him.

  19. Sophosticated on

Terribly sad to see him leave. Buddy probably scared for his life with recent attacks.

  20. Lonely_Refuse4988 on

Can Democrats, for once, fight, speak truth to MAGA & Donnie’s bullying and lies, and not roll over when these unAmerican jerks try to target enemies?

Mamdani gives a great case study on how to remain genuine and successfully fight and speak out against right wing bullies.

  21. I was getting worried for his family hopefully he can get some rest now we don’t deserve him.

  22. justprettymuchdone on

I don’t blame him. Democrats tear down their best candidates and he was already being targeted by insane MAGA assholes.

  23. Weak.

Trump literally committed treason on january 6th, and he stayed in and got re-elected by our moron voters.

    Stop being cowards.

  24. >But sagging approval ratings and intensified scrutiny into fraud in state safety net programs in recent months has fueled nerves among Democrats and calls for Walz to step aside.

Democrats can’t help but to shoot themselves in the foot.

This is why I do think the “both sides are bad” argument actually is true. They’re just different kinds of bad. Dems self destruct and are their own worst enemy, while normal people and morals are Republicans’ worst enemies.

  25. uniklyqualifd on

Unfortunately the Democrats will have to do what Canada did with its leader. Let one good man act as a lightening rod for the firehose of propaganda, then slip in a great replacement at the last minute, too late for the propaganda to refocus.

  26. Cute-Contract-6762 on

This really doesn’t seem fair or right. Walz handled the fraud well literally has overseen NUMEROUS prosecutions of fraud in Minnesota. He hasn’t turned a blind eye to Somali fraud the way Florida has turned a blind eye on Cuban Medicare fraud (but we won’t talk about that, heaven forbid a Republican run state be criticized!!)

  27. Democrats going out of their way to give credence to Republican bullying and conspiracy theories. Keep rolling over, Dems! That’s how you stop this country from turning into a dictatorship!

    Fucking cowards.

  28. TheBatemanFlex on

There have been over 90 arrests made in the last 3 years, several audits, including an extensive audit just last year.

If you hold people accountable today, it is used against you by the GOP as evidence that a crime had occurred on your watch. This is why they reject accountability.

  29. IllustriousNorth338 on

Republicans get away with crimes and Democrats get punished for crimes even if they didn’t do any.

Whatever hope you Americans have for the future, you might as well put it aside or squirrel it away in a safe deposit box or even dump it in the trash. You’re unwilling to do what’s necessary to fix your country so it will only get worse.

I won’t be wishing you guys good luck. What good would that do for people scheduled to be purged in a few years?

  30. gorillafightsurvivor on

    Two things can be true:

    1. Walz stepping down is fully understandable given the onslaught of bullshit he and his family have had to deal with for the last year and a half.

    2. Walz stepping down is a huge disappointment and may very well be to the detriment of his state.

It doesn’t have to be one or the other. Nuance still exists.

  31. While this is a sad day this is the right move.

He is doing the right thing by Minnesotans. A Democrat not named Walz is more likely to get elected.
