This is starting to look like a major debacle. The president advisors figured occupation would be futile, pretending to learn from Iraq and Afghanistan etc. They figured it would crumble with Maduro’s and his Wife’s arrest.
Now, there will be no changes in how the country runs and who their allies will be. U.S. will not be running anything there. The Rubio and the Viceroy stunt is pathetic. Latin American countries are uniting. Military power alone is nothing.

B-but I thought he Venezuelans are docile cucks who would let us in with open arms and give us all their oil! You mean that a dictatorship had *more than one* person clinging onto power, and there might be warring factions that will turn to terrorism?
Xalazi on
The reality of ousting a dictator in a non-democratic way is that it leads to a lot of people getting killed in the process. The lack of unity leads to factions with conflicting interest using the Coup as an excuse to get rid of their long time enemies. A lot of people not involved in the attack are going to be accused of being involved in the attack.
Anyone familiar with the history of Banana Republics in Latin America know how this story goes.

Shocker. The government whose leader who got taken that 50 countries acknowledged he rigged elections wants to keep the corruption.
8 millions flee but the government pretends it was doing the right things. It’s disgusting.
Listen to Trinidad & Tobago or Panamas president talk about it not South Africa and Cubas.
South Africa said “who is safe?” And that “Maduro was a good leader” Probably the nations who don’t abuse their people.

In an odd plot twist, Trump declares himself newly elected President of Venezuela and begins deporting Venezuelan dissidents to USA.

Ah, and the witch-hunt begins. I imagine a lot of innocent people will be going to prison over the coming months.

This is a fucking disaster.
Were they hoping for a popular uprising in response? That’s the only way this could have gone that would have resulted in a pro-US government.
Instead, and the much likelier outcome, the ruling party will use this to purge (imprison, murder) not just any actual collaborators, but the general opposition. They will use it to tighten their control of the country and the imperial enemy is a terrific excuse to do so.
So what now, more intense military involvement? A full scale invasion?

When you remove cancer you don’t just take a couple cells. Trump is a moron for leaving his second in command in power.

This is for show… on both sides.
There likely was regime insiders that struck a deal to hand over Maduro and get rid of Cuban security forces.
The show on the Trump side is that they have control of the situation.
Can Trump and company bride or force the regime into compliance? Not really, but enough that each side can play up their propaganda for a limited time frame.

I posed this question to some Trump supporters. What about the hundreds if not thousands of Maduro backers left in the country? You don’t think they’ll just be all peace loving just like that?

So, correct me if I’m wrong, the Venezuelan government has not changed and in order for it to actually change; the US will have to put boots on the ground and force a change.

That strikes me as a thinly veiled excuse for a political purge.
