California Republican Rep. Doug LaMalfa died at 65 after 13 years in the House, Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) announced Tuesday, bringing the House GOP majority to 218-213.

LaMalfa, who served on the Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Transportation Committees, was in the California state assembly and Senate before being elected to the House in 2012. His unexpected death narrows Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) House majority, which fell earlier this week to 219-213 when ex-Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) resignation took effect.

Johnson can lose just two votes on any party-line bill and still pass it, assuming full attendance in the chamber. Democrats will almost certainly gain a seat in late January, when a special election to replace a Texas Democrat takes place.

This is a breaking news story.[ Check back here for updates. ](https://news.bgov.com/bloomberg-government-news/house-republican-lamalfa-dies-suddenly-after-13-years-in-house?utm_source=reddit.com&utm_medium=bgov)

A racist, anti-choice, election truther, climate science denialist, Russia stooge, and Trump stan? His family have my sympathies for their loss, but it’s hard to imagine that politics in general isn’t better off without him.

Awful people die. Good people die. He won’t be remembered, and if he ever comes up in a mention in a history book it will be a passing reference to some idiotic quote made by a typical selfish egomaniac that we allowed to rule over us when we let the nation slip away.

At least he wasn’t a podcaster so we don’t have to build statues.

  4. And now I just got the alert that Rep. Baird (R-IN) is in the hospital after a car crash. He’s stable but it just reinforces the fact that Johnson’s majority is on thinner ice by the day

  5. Fight fire with fire. Drag out replacement as long as possible. Under CA law, Newsom must issue a proclamation for general election within 14 days. He can elect to consolidate the special primary with California’s statewide direct primary on June 2, 2026… with the special election during the midterms in November.

I expect him to play hardball given GOP BS in Texas and elsewhere. No playing like we’re in a fair fight.

Note this is a deep red CA district about +25 GOP. Not going to flip.

I wish unto him in his eternity exactly the same compassion and kindness that he, in his lifetime, has shown his fellow humans. Nothing more and nothing less.

  7. I hope Gavin “pulls an Abbott” and decides to wait nearly a year to hold a special election to replace him

  8. 13 years in the house and this is the first time I’ve ever heard this man’s name.

And the Republicans have the audacity to talk about “career politicians” who never get anything done.

Well, good news, there’s one less today

  9. What a horrible time to go for someone as far right as he was. Basically gives his district their best shot at flipping dem it’s ever had.

  10. He voted against impeachment. “Service” needs to be qualified as service to a criminal. Fuck him.
