This should be federal law already tbh. you take away a kid’s provider, you should be the one providing for them. ngl i hope this actually sticks and isn’t just a headline dude. it’s one of the few things coming out of missouri that actually makes sense lmao.
No_Resident_2279 on
Technically a great idea but how does it work when the driver is in prison for 15 years? can’t get blood from a stone dude. unless there’s a state fund that pays the kids upfront and then debt-collects from the convict forever, it might just be a symbolic victory ngl.

Imagine getting a monthly check from the person who killed your parent… talk about a dark reminder every 30 days lmao. but seriously, hit them where it hurts—their bank account. making drunk driving a lifetime financial sentence might actually do more than a short jail stint tbh.

Finally, some common sense legislation. Let’s hope this passes and sets a precedent for other states.

What if it’s a sports team coach though? They can’t be held accountable, that would be communism.

I’m all for this even though it would be symbolic 99% of the time a dude in jail isn’t going to pay this and all that. That being said my biggest concern is in the cases where it does get paid amd the child has been moved to the foster system how would they prevent theft by foster parents or family.

What kind of prisoner/slave labor is that support supposed to rely on? Sure seems like the implication is that the community should provide for the welfare of all regardless of happenstance. We should probably focus on keeping drunk people from getting behind the wheel after providing for kids.

Would be nice to vote for this on the next ballot.

Why only drunk drivers?
It’s not a terrible idea, but it should be applicable for anyone found guilty of taking the life of a parent.
Pretty fucked to that I could kill someone in a drunk driving crash and be required to pay, but not if I shoot the person to death or otherwise take their life.

Yeah I don’t know, this one is weird to me for some reason.

A legislator will get a staffer to research what groups have the highest number of DUI killings. If they turn out to be likely Republican voters, this bill will die a quiet death.

Distracted and drunk drivers should be penalized much more harshly.

Great. Now do it for ICE agents who kill parents.
Plus-Committee3764 on
It sounds like a great idea, however, if it starts one year after being released and then only applies until the child turns 18, will it be effective?
Not only will it be very difficult for the drunk driver to earn much, thus unable to pay much, but I would sure hope that they spend at least 15-20; years behind bars, and if they are only liable until the child(ren) turn 18 yo, how much would that be? Most child support is due until paid in full, no matter the age of the child at the time of the payment, if there is any past due. This article doesn’t clarify that.
