Competence mythology attached to authoritarian adjacent figures has a specific psychological function, it lets people feel protected rather than responsible and that function doesn’t go away just because the evidence contradicts it.

These people cannot understand nuance at all, and have no appreciation for how complex governing millions of people is. They believe Trump is fit for the job because they think it’s as easy as waving your hands and making it so.
